When your cutting on a lathe sometimes there is a very sharp barb left, if the lathe is spinning fast you might not be able to see it. If you where to grab onto the part to feel how smooth it was and run your hand down the part you get what happens in op's pic.

Effectively once it pulls you in, there isnt enough friction on the work material to keep pulling the clothes until they rip, so your face is pressed against the spinning machine and you only have your own body strength to rip the clothes.
