Hey /sci/entists, I figured some of you might enjoy this (especially the Mathematicians). It's a documentary called "Quants: The Alchemists of Wall Street." It's about the mathematical geniuses who form all of the financial models running the world markets. I found it while looking for "The Last Day's of Lehman Brothers".

ugh, as a mathematician i hate being associated to these quants. Most quants are physicists who only do calculus and maybe some probability. they are certainly not mathematical geniuses

Quants are just a fad
You can't truly predict profits or people's spending behavior. You can only do probabilities.
Which is why statistics is the most useful math in business.

They mentioned that in the movie. One of the pioneers, I think Emanuel Derman or something, was a theoretical physicist and left that for a job at Goldman Sachs.

what about applied mathematics?

>> No.1628038

>>1628030
There is a significant difference between applied mathematicians and physicists. I am an applied mathematician (post doc). The role of an applied mathematician is to understand a problem from a different field and abstract it enough so that you can use the machinery from mathematics. Physicists to me just seem to like writing down a bunch of equations and notation.

actually that's just what undergraduate physicists learn.
Graduate level physicists learn:
lie groups, lie algebra, Clifford algebras, exterior algebra for particle physics
Itō calculus and stochastic differential equations for diffusion
symplectic geometry for classical mechanics
infinite dimensional manifolds for quantum field theory

Why cant you fags stop nagging about your fucking degrees?
I dont care.. Im a Ph.D math fag, but I think phys has well enough math knowledge to make models.

Mathematicians should just do math, and give the formulas to the physicists who really can do something with the numbers.
We cant.. we just find some numbers

Jessica Simpson, like all celebrities, will obtain no peace in her lifetime. She also probably doesn't get to do what she wants and get paid for it. Scientists and Engineers are basically the only people who consistently wake up happy to do their job.

Are you really that stupid? First of all, most people don't depend on their jobs to find peace and happiness. Secondly, you can find people in almost any line of work that really enjoys what they do. Do you think a successful painter is any less happy with his work than an engineer? Fact is, there are miserable people in all fields of work.
