Eric Weinstein is not a complete crackpot or fraud and he learned math and physics as a phd student. He does have a basic understanding of high energy theory (circa 1990) and the mathematics involved. However he has no publications besides his phd thesis, and that has had almost no citations over the last 30 years, so it was basically useless. It also looks like he got significant help from a postdoc on his thesis.

His theory of geometric unity seems to just be an attempt to remember some half-baked ideas he had in the 80s when he was a grad student. I read his paper on it, and it constantly referred to trying to interpret his old notes. It seems like he had some potential as a grad student but never really learned how to properly do theoretical physics research.
