15969737 No.15969737 [Reply] [Original]

What are the lamest and most cringe fields of science?
Quantum physics has got to be high on the list, its just a bunch of nerds screeching jargon and catchphrases while trying to insist that fabrications like "virtual particles" are actually real. The whole idea of dissecting atoms and atomic subatomic particles and finding out what makes them tick seems like a pretty based idea, how did that end up turning into a ridiculous sideshow dominated by people who have no apparent skills or abilities other than stringing buzzwords together?

What other parts of science are so cringe that they should just be holocausted and completely forgotten about?

Quantum physics is actually pretty useful. It's used in microprocessor design and other kinds of electronics and things like microscopy etc. High energy physics is starting to become more cringe, and stuff like string theory has been cringe for decades. The study of animal behaviours, which I believe is called Ethology, is cringe. Like sure study a few animals, important or different ones, but these days they seem to study the most useless animals ever, ones that have basically zero impact on anything, like some random beetle species deep in the amazon that doesn't even do anything unique or have any kind of unique physiology. Seems like a waste of money and one of the lowest priority fields in terms of things that improve the human condition

so it cosmology, so is most of astronomy, so is a lot of geology and pretty much all of paleontology. climate science is constantly claiming the ability to predict the future and those predictions are all inherently unfalsifiable unless you're willing to wait 100 years to find out if they were correct. when they make shorter term predictions they're always wrong, but for whatever reason that doesn't prevent them from making longer term projections.

all the subatomic shit is definitely real, but its so weird no one fully knows whats going on yet which is why there are a lot of strange and sometimes competing interpretations and abstractions. It will hopefully get better when more is understood

Except it is not. There are bone remains, there are cultural artifacts, there are ritualistic religious artifacts.
If you see a tibia bone broken that was regrown incorrectly you know that old ancestor had to suffer and had a lot of relatives and tribal people taking care of them. Simple inference and deduction. Same goes with number of obsidian knives in neanderthal tribal sites compared to cro magnon, I'll give you that homework to do on your own so you get that inference muscle some training.

I bet you're the type of person that shouts for "source" every time they get a chance.

Ahhh yes the virtual particle!
It can, oops sorry, THEY(always in pairs) can manifest from the energy fabric of the universe in any form they want, as many times as they want as long as they happen before they can be measured, so there ya go! One photon may create a position electron pair that annihilate each other then disappear before they can be measured...
Why? Well, instead of working out the maths, let's just make the physics bend to our equations!

Have you ever considered that maybe perhaps you are the one who doesn't understand virtual particles? You know after all, you haven't actually studied QFT so maybe there is something you are misunderstanding. Wouldn't that be more plausible than tens (hundreds?) of thousands of people working on this since around 1950 being wrong? The people that work on this tend to be pretty smart too.

That's a history thing, not a science thing. Science requires an experimentally falsifiable hypothesis. When you synthesize various historical artifacts to understna the past, that is called the study of history.
Evopsych tries to use historical stories to explain modern psychology, but since these cannot be experimented with these stories are literally "Just-So" myth tier on the level of a folk tale about how the bean got its seam

Well, yeah, your misconception of virtual particles sounds stupid, but if you could actually reflect on yourself you would realize it is more plausible that it sounds stupid because you have a misconception (considering you haven't actually studied it) rather than that everyone who has studied it is wrong.

Pretty much anything to do with theoretical physics is hot trash. Don't get me wrong, there's some brilliant mathematics that gets developed in the name of solving physics problems, but deterministic theoretical physics is not particularly "scientific" and tends to attract turbo autists with little self awareness and even less humility.

>how did that end up turning into a ridiculous sideshow dominated by people who have no apparent skills or abilities other than stringing buzzwords together?
the sideshow you're talking about is not academic physics but popular science writing, which is necessarily like that because the intended audience can't do math and so can't understand how any of the things being talked about actually work
classical mechanics and things easily analogizable to classical mechanics like special relativity can be taught in basic form to a popular audience, but quantum mechanics covers things that have no analogy in our everyday experience and so the only way to talk about them is using math to model their behavior
you can't meaningfully talk about quantum mechanics without doing math, so you should generally ignore people who don't talk about the math, and if you can't understand the math yourself, you're not qualified to evaluate the claims being made
