Why isn't a game like shogi where captured opponents pieces can be placed back in the game popular in the US? This would eliminate the draw problem with chess?!

There is crazy house chess which is exactly that. And it's pretty interesting. Tempo is more key, and it's more attack-oriented!

>> No.15957179

The only thing it lacks it's a variation that has a random setup like chess960

doesn't white have a huge advantage though? I know shogi is perfectly balanced even for computers.

Yeah. White has like a pawn or two worth of advantage.

Because it doesn't have a tradition behind it, and drawing is only an issue for the top 1% of players.

Not even a pawn, it's more like a 0.25 pawns or less.

Most of us grew out of playing Stratego around junior high.

Westerners have a harder time literally because they see kanji and get filtered. Go is somewhat easier because it's more abstract and I have gotten people to play Go. I really wish people would try Shogi though because I also enjoy it a lot and have a physical board.

Maybe it's because all those pieces look the same to a westerner.

Well we could change the characters or shape them instead, as in chess.

The problem is everyone would instantly stop playing it because it would just be 'bad chess' instead of 'exotic chess'

>draw problem
Are you a titled player? Because if you're not, there is no draw problem.

>> No.15958755

>>15958711
yes there is
if you play positionally there is always a draw problem. there will be a massive blunder which leads to a tactical advantage but without the blunder there is almost no way to get. games down to luck and creating a comfortable position where your opponent spergs out and messes up. gradual advantages get squandered in an instant because the threat of a draw forces more aggressive play until the tactics lead to something stupid

the draw themselves don't happen but they force stupid playstyles

>>15958397
what is the theory of that game anyways? is it supposed to end in a draw or is it all luck?

The goal is to capture the enemy's flag before they capture your flag.
