Hello.
Going into physics at the University of Michigan soon.
Still trying to figure out exactly I want to be though.
I decided to get a job that I would love, not something that necessarily makes a lot. So, I've narrowed it down to two things: Astronomer, or particle physicist.
I've listed all the pros and cons for both: they are equal in my eyes. On one side, I love the fact that the very small resembles the very big, and that there are still so many unknowns in the world of particle physics. I hope to one day help discover a third natural unit, maybe a natural unit of time (for those that don't know, natural units are units in nature, the speed of light and Plank's Length or constant).
On the other side, there is so much left to explore about the universe, and my work as an astronomer may one day discover an earth-like planet that has life.
So, I want to get /sci/'s opinion: How could I help humanity more: as a particle or quantum physicist, or an astronomer.
pic unrelated, but funny

you will not differentate into particular fields of physics until grad level. For undergrad it is all the same shit.

I realize that, but I plan on staying in school until I have my doctorate. I'm asking what I should eventually become.

what's with this topic? every few days someone makes one of these threads.

you should just wait until you actually know shit about physics first.

Right now you have no fucking idea what you are talking about. Just wait until you have the experience, then you will be able to make a good choice. I doubt right now you actually know what a Partcile physicist or a Astronomer really does, much less how physics is structured research-wise.

I think I fucking do, considering I studied on my own since 9th grade. I know a bit about particle physics and quantum physics, and I know what both of them do. Fuck off asshole.

So you've never taken a physics class? Studying on your doesn't mean shit in the long run. What grade are in now?

is the university of michigan difficult to get into?

12th.
I've taken a physics class as well, but it didn't help much. I already knew the whole course. I've got a couple textbooks on physics, quantum physics (haven't finished that one yet), and particle physics.

Reading POP-Physics books is shit tier
That is not real physics, nor does it prepare you for real physics. The only thing Pop-physics does it confuse people.

What is the difference between quantum physics and particle physics? If you know so much? LMAO

No. 50% acceptance rate. I'm either applying to Caltech or University of Chicago for the grad program.

Bullshit!

Name? Who is it by?

Not all are about particle physics.

Fundamentals of Physics
Introduction to Quantum Physics
Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics
I used to have another, but I lost it.

God, you are just the rudest, defensive little asshole, aren't you? Someone tells you the truth? They're an asshole. Someone else tells you the truth? Fucking asshole.

Unless you are one lucky mother fucker, you will be going nowhere in the field of physics.

"So, I see you've only taken one basic physics class, yet you plan on making this your future. Do you know how fucked you are"

"But I studied on my own, asshole!"

You have a problem with planning ahead too much. You dont even know physics yet, and you are thinking about Grad programs already.

Just slow down little guy.....
Your undegrad research and the people you know will weigh heavly on your grad school choice.

There are a million books called

Just look up the names of the books yourself. I don't have time to check who made all of them.
