With the exception of our own star, its solar system, and the shortage of phosphorous outside of our area, nothing appears special about our local group. It is utterly generic. As we unfortunately have only one data point, it is best to assume an even distribution. I point my arm out to the sky, and declare the number of aliens in that direction to be X. Maybe X is zero, maybe it is in the millions. Should I point my arm anywhere else, the number of aliens there should also be X. Sure, our solar system is incredibly weird, and our sun is weird - but the conditions that gave rise to this oddity are not expected to be unique. There should be similar oddities in equal amounts in all directions giving rise to life, unless phosphorus is distributed unevenly. The only good solutions to the Fermi paradox are that we just don't see them because they're far away and we aren't looking hard enough, and/or the universe is young and we were fast.
I do have my doubts about the timing, though. It is often (and correctly) said that life appeared on earth right after the conditions for it appeared, but people forget to mention that this unicellular life spent billions of years being uninteresting. Is that not enough time for a few civilizations to pop up? I don't know. That's why it is still a paradox.

They must have some truly massive radio telescopes. More importantly, it seems odd to me that they would laugh.
