I'm a lecturer and mostly agree. I have experienced the same thing. Although I believe it really comes down to how the lecturerer treats students like that. A few of my students are definitely smarter than I am. Just don't shut them down. I use their insights (not implying they're correcting the material) to improve the lecture material and to learn from them. And then, others learn from them through the improvements as well. No big deal imo.

If you are a lecturer my perspective may be informative as I've found very little research on this as very few people give a fuck about "gifted" students. Like people just don't know what to do with you if your interests and skills are way beyond your coursework, but society seems to force everyone on the same track and you're only allowed to stuff so many classes together no matter how many years you've maintained that 4.0 or how many perfect scores you get or got on assessment or entry. 8 years later it just feels like the same thing where every professor just has no fucking clue what to do with me or what to challenge me with, and like in primary and secondary education I just get kind of neglected because I got A's so it doesn't matter.

If you do get that student who is so far out there he may as well be from Mars and they're at all like me they really are desperate for their mind to be valued and put to use. Despite a whole lot of trying I've never had that happen because of mandatory social hoops that keep everyone at the same level even after all this time. It's depressing. The whole thing has been nothing but demotivating and depressing. Maybe if I were wealthy or from wealth and went to some top school it would've been different but I had to pay for everything and get out of homelessness myself. Society really does not give a shit and I really do fear I am just alone and nobody will understand how bad it feels to be that fish out of water your whole academic and professional career.

So in general I want, I guess what others like me would want, would be to do things at my level and pace and that are actually meaningful to be doing. Not just more of the same homework. It's sad how much I've had to fight for even a little bit of that, and I relate this to you in the hopes someone will understand it ought not be that way and neglect is just as bad if you're in the "gifted" category.

Truth is, gifted students are exhausting for normies and lecturers generally aren't the best of the best (including me). They don't know what to do with them. Honestly, and this also relates to what you wrote after this quote, that is true even for professors. The gifted people I've met all went for the industry. All of them. Imo, the correct way to treat gifted students would be to acquaint them with professors or other supervisors who can guide them in whatever catches their interest at the time. Unfortunately, professors are just as lazy as lecturers. Perhaps not all of them, but literally all the ones I got to know. Academia is dead, especially for the gifted. Sorry.
The most advanced student I've ever had went to an elite university and currently publishes nonstop in a field not related to his former curriculum here. That's something I noticed in those students; they're easily bored and seek challenges elsewhere.

I don't try to hold it against anyone I just think more people really need to know, and spread that knowledge, that neglect is just as bad for gifted students. Currently from what I can tell that is the norm if you're unlucky and just not in the "right" schools, so, I hope you can do something with that. Even if it is just to spread that it is a huge problem and you will really fuck people up as a result. I've nearly quit many times just over the frustrating lack of challenge and isolation, and how little anyone values anything I could do or wanted to try to do. That's a problem. Really more of a problem than I think people appreciate and it needs to be talked about by lecturers and institutions more. Currently it's relegated to incredibly niche studies on "gifted students" and nearly nothing on "gifted adults" let alone any advocacy. That is insane to me you'd think society and academia would want to benefit from using ability not neglect it until it fucks off or quits. That has got to be fixed and more people need to talk about it outside the super niche two or so people publishing about it in obscure psychology journals.
