SDA to test satellite laser links in degraded conditions, ESA Calls for Small Moon Mission Ideas, Article about Dream Chasers Space Shuttle inspired TPS
---
https://spacenews.com/space-development-agency-funds-demonstration-of-satellite-laser-links-in-degraded-environments/
> Space Development Agency funds demonstration of satellite laser links in ‘degraded’ environments
> The agency awarded General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems a $14 million contract to produce two small satellites equipped with optical terminals
> The contract, announced Sept. 27, is for a demonstration of satellite-to-satellite laser communications under adverse conditions that can degrade the communication link.

https://europeanspaceflight.com/esa-calls-for-small-moon-mission-ideas/
> ESA Calls for Small Moon Mission Ideas
> A call for proposals from the European Space Agency is asking European industry to submit ideas for “small lunar missions.”
> The call was published as a component of the agency’s Terrae Novae exploration programme, which seeks to establish a sustained European presence in low Earth orbit, send the first European astronaut to the Moon by 2030, and participate in the first human mission to Mars. These small exploration missions are a new component of the Terrae Novae strategy.
> Each mission will not be able to exceed a total budget of €50 million, and development from kickoff to launch should take less than four and half years. The agency explained that it would prefer companies or consortia that bid to be able to see the proposed mission through from inception to the implementation phase.

> Similar to the shuttle, each tile on the vehicle is a unique design. “[Each tile] differs in size, shape, thickness, and density,” Sierra Space said. However, they note some significant differences.
>Each of the tiles on Tenacity are made of a stronger material than what was used on each of NASA’s orbiters, although still silica-based.
>Most of the white material seen aboard the space shuttle is a thermal blanket rather than tiles. As newer orbiters were built, the vehicles tended to use more of the thermal blanket in a way to reduce vehicle weight.

> On Dream Chaser, it’s both black and white tiles. Sierra Space told NSF the main difference between the two is a special additive to the outer glass coating.
>Another significant difference is that the vehicle consists primarily of the two types of tiles, black and white. The Space Shuttle had portions of the orbiter that needed to be reinforced to handle the heat of reentry including the nose and the leading edge of the wings. In those locations, NASA used special tiles made of reinforced carbon carbon (RCC) to withstand the higher temperatures.
>In comparison, we’re told Dream Chaser has no RCC-type panels on the vehicle. “Standard tiles can withstand up to 2,600° F (1,420° C) for multiple reentry cycles, and specialized ones can go higher for single use,” the company told NSF.

> Tenacity and future Dream Chaser cargo missions to the ISS will fly under the Commercial Resupply Services-2 round of NASA contracts. Sierra Space would be the third and final company to fly under this contract. Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus resupply vehicle along with SpaceX’s Cargo Dragon v2 complete the contract. Dream Chaser is expected to provide a minimum of seven uncrewed cargo missions under this contract.
> One unique design factor with this variant of Dream Chaser is the foldable wings. This not only allows for a smaller vehicle profile when docked to the ISS but allows it to fit inside any five-meter payload fairing.

> Dream Chaser is expected to carry up to five metric tons of pressurized cargo and a half metric ton of unpressurized cargo to the ISS. That’s in part due to the attached Shooting Star cargo module.
> This portion of the vehicle is not reused and will be disposed of prior to Dream Chaser’s reentry. Sierra Space says they are offering this as a service to help dispose of garbage or other items no longer needed in space or on Earth.
> The vehicle will be able to return 1.75 metric tons and can land on most conventional runways. It’s currently scheduled to land at the Launch and Landing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The company also says the largest g-force any payload would experience on reentry would be only 1.5 Gs.

I'm pretty sure he talked about how double decking most roads would decrease traffic in some interview very long ago (like 15 years ago or something) when someone asked what problems should they try solving
I guess boring tunnels is going to be more scalable than double decking roads and generally more general purpose
for instance cheap boring is probably one of the pre-requirements for the hyperloop becoming a thing (only one, there are others and those might be unfeasible from a cost/engineering standpoint)
but tunnel boring is going to be useful on mars too, so there are multiple reasons to go with boring instead of building roads up by double or triple or whatever deckign

Pissed off by LA traffic. Ironically, his Boring venture will have long term positive benefits for Moon/Mars when it becomes possible to ship parts of the machine to Moon/Mars and use additive manufacturing ISRU to build much of the hardware offworld to recompose and use as a working product to build 3.8m wide tunnels which can be sealed using a combination of regolith brick and mortar to create 3.3 meter wide functional living spaces or 10.8 feet. Which is about the width of an average room in most homes across the world for a middle income family. You can then using bulkheads spaced say every 30 feet create whole room segments all underground or build transport tunnels to fast move goods, services, and people. Lava tubes are cool and all, but getting hardware from the surface down into them safely and at scale will be a lot harder than building a borer on the Moon or Mars and digging into the surface to build the tunnels yourself.

9 cubesats to understand plasma around earth, solar wind probe or satellite, corona probe with UV imager and spectrograph, aurora satellite
---
> CINEMA
> The Cross-scale Investigation of Earth’s Magnetotail and Aurora (CINEMA) mission would work to understand the structure and evolution of Earth’s plasma sheet – a long sheet of denser space plasma in the magnetic fields flowing behind Earth, known as the magnetotail — using a constellation of nine CubeSats flown in sun-synchronous, low Earth orbit.
---
> CMEx
> The Chromospheric Magnetism Explorer (CMEx) mission would attempt to understand the magnetic nature of solar eruptions and identify the magnetic sources of the solar wind.
---
> EUV CME and Coronal Connectivity Observatory
> The Extreme ultraviolet Coronal Mass Ejection and Coronal Connectivity Observatory (ECCCO) consists of a single spacecraft with two instruments, a wide-field extreme ultra-violet imager and a unique imaging EUV spectrograph. ECCCO’s observations would contribute to understanding the middle corona, the dynamics of eruptive events leaving the Sun, and the conditions that produce the outward streaming solar wind.
---
> MAAX
> The primary objective of the Magnetospheric Auroral Asymmetry Explorer (MAAX) mission would be to improve our understanding of how electrodynamic coupling between Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere regulates auroral energy flow. The mission would use two identical spacecraft equipped with dual-wavelength ultraviolet imagers to provide global imaging of northern and southern aurora.

It's nonexistent. This is exactly what everyone was pissed about earlier. They're taking NH and handing it off to a completely different department. Not only is there no budget for locating any new kupier belt targets, the researchers who would be needed to actually study those objects all have to leave to find new jobs and aren't going to be available later on.

NASA to extend New Horizons mission through late 2020s

https://spacenews.com/nasa-to-extend-new-horizons-mission-through-late-2020s/
> WASHINGTON — NASA has agreed to extend operations of its New Horizons spacecraft through late this decade to support “multidisciplinary” science that could include another Kuiper Belt object flyby.
> NASA announced Sept. 29 that it would extend New Horizons, currently approved for operations through the end of fiscal year 2024, until the spacecraft exits the Kuiper Belt, which is expected around the end of the decade. The focus of the mission, starting in fiscal year 2025, will be collecting heliophysics data as the spacecraft heads out of the solar system.
> The future of New Horizons has been in doubt after NASA elected to extend the mission, part of NASA’s planetary science division, only through 2024, proposing to then transfer it to NASA’s heliophysics division. That move was rejected by the mission’s principal investigator, Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute, who argued that the move would rule out any further work in planetary science by the original mission team.
> NASA said that the new extended mission will be jointly managed by NASA’s heliophysics and planetary science divisions, but “primarily” funded by planetary science.
> NASA spent $9.5 million on New Horizons in 2022 and proposed spending $9.7 million on the mission in its fiscal year 2024 budget proposal.

That isn't saying much.
In retrospect, buying twitter was absolutely the right move, Biden admin doesn't like him simply because he has power outside of what they control, he needs to kick at the foundations (public support/outreach) of that for his long term plans. This just isn't true. Have people here not read Liftoff?

>From 2006 to 2008, SpaceX endured three failed launches of the Falcon 1 rocket. The fourth, in September 2008, finally succeeded. Still, the company appeared poised to go bankrupt as it struggled to meet payroll in late 2008. Even as its cash ran out, SpaceX was in the midst of capital-intensive transition from the single-engine Falcon 1 rocket to the much more complex Falcon 9 rocket. Moreover, to earn business from NASA to supply the ISS, it would also need to build a delivery capsule.

>That fall and early winter marked the darkest hours for the cash-strapped Musk, as both SpaceX and Tesla spent hundreds of millions of dollars on development, with little revenue to show for it. "I could either pick SpaceX or Tesla or split the money I had left between them," Musk told Vance in the book. "That was a tough decision. If I split the money, maybe both of them would die. If I gave the money to just one company, the probability of it surviving was greater, but then it would mean certain death for the other company." The economy worsened that fall, and by December, Musk's money had run out and he'd tapped all the loans he could.

>Then, two days before Christmas of 2008, NASA announced it was awarding commercial cargo contracts to Orbital Sciences for 19 flights and SpaceX for 12 flights. The contract was valued at $1.6 billion for SpaceX.

NASA saved SpaceX with a 1.6 billion dollar contract when they had a 1/4th launch success rate, and no hardware to fulfill the contract with. How in the world can you say the government contracts go to the "Best man for the job" but ignore NASA giving 1.6 billion to a company that has lost 3/4 of it's rockets?

Kistler never had anything to do with CRS. There was also no competition for CRS, unless you count COTS, yet CRS was only created after COTS was awarded so that doesn't really work. Also I'm not sure what your quote indicates other than the fact that CRS is not COTS.

An expendable Falcon Heavy can launch about twenty tons to C3=0. I think it was multiple people tbdesu. some decent posts got caught in the crossfire which makes me think staff just went scorched earth and took down anything remotely off-topic, and I've definitely responded to off-topic bait during moments of weakness in the past. (not this thread though, lucky me). I do remember being hit with a warning once for engaging with some retard from /pol/ even though my post responded to 3 other posts that were all on topic; someone was just powertripping and/or exhausted from slogging through so much shit.

>Starship stacked at Starbase ahead of flight, team continues to work with the FAA on a launch license

those seem pretty on topic, so I'm betting it's multiple anons who fell for bait being nuked, which is kinda gay.
also I don't want to believe that 20% of this entire thread is a single poster, and all that extremely low quality is just one person... who somehow posts almost 24/7 - that would have to be either an extremely convincing chat bot or maybe the most deranged anon on this whole site.

I wouldn't be posting like this if we weren't page 10, also did someone forget to check the staging before launch?

I still get the feeling it's one person getting banned. If you check on archived.moe, you can get deletion times. Same deletion times doesn't necessarily mean it's the same person as the time shown is when the archive updated so if multiple people got banned between updates they'll have the same deletion time.
Along with the deletion times, the double spacing style matches with the other off-topic posts. Like you list >>15780366 as a sample then I see deleted posts like >>15780571 >>15780583 >>15780639 with similar spacing. With the matching formatting and deletion times,I can't help but think they're the same person.
