Nah I'm like 2-3 weeks in. The teacher is shit and can barely speak english and the "homework" is randomized chapters spread across the book, like chapter 2 is week 2 and chapter 1 is week 4 for some reason. Shit's retarded and it makes me feel retarded for failing this shit.

Can you share the syllabus? I can probably recommend a good book that you can use instead of listening to that teacher.

as you should desu. also just go on khan academy if it's really that bad. algebra should be trivial for any adult with a functioning brain; you're probably overthinking things

The reason I asked is really to see if it's proof based, as there's no point recommending something like Artin or Vinberg if the course doesn't demand it.

Here's my semester schedule.
Is this normal? I don't get why we have something from chapter 1 in week fucking 8 and then multiple sections of chapter 3 in weeks 6-7.

Prob gonna shoot myself in minecraft soon, I spent 3 years of my life learning intuition for calculus, statistical learning, and proper math notation and I didn't bother learning algebra, kek.

Ty. Which parts are you struggling with in specifics? They do kind of jump around all over the place, depending on where they want their lesson plans to hit. It's okay to be frustrated, just get a little bite of something to eat and something to drink. Get a piece of gum to chew before trying to approach it again. You've probably psyched yourself out and just need to do a reset.

After seeing this, definitely consider the Gelfand Algebra book above. It's only 156 pages but should cover most of the topics there, except perhaps operations on matrices.

that's a pretty dense course desu, usually that would be learned over a couple of years in high school, not one semester. don't stress that you're not picking it up straight away. apply yourself and work hard, it's worth it because all that material is foundational to any higher maths. t. mathfag

>> No.15738296

this math is basic enough that the teacher being trash isn't a good enough excuse, use khan academy and youtube and learn yourself

if you are able to realize you are behind then you are smart enough to teach yourself this stuff

Came here to say this, use Khan academy and other youtube resources if you need them. A lot of professors are incompetent, fortunately we live in a time where we have access to great ones on demand for free.

just study exactly the chapter/sections he reviews when he assigns them. doubling back to chapter 1 is weird but it's not necessarily a bad thing. i'm in calc II and we've skipped the first half of chapter 1, and the entirety of chapter 2 and went straight to 3.
college math isn't like other courses, you can't depend on the lecture and do a quick skim of the material to get by all the time - copy out the textbook chapters word for word and do the practice problems. use wolfram alpha to check your answers for ones that don't have answers in the book

Anon, you can do this. I returned to college, completely bombed my placement exam and was placed into Pre - Algebra remedial math. After a lot of hard work and frustration re-learning Math, I've just started Linear Algebra.

The best thing that helped me when I started out is putting my ego to the side and admitting that I needed help because I didn't know how to do math. I was in my tutor center 3 -4 times a week asking every question I could think of.

You got this, don't give up so early.

What does that even mean? I don't speak Amerishart and I am not familiar with third world educational standards. So you mean like how to add exponents? Or defining rings with zero divisors or some other shit like that (=abstract algebra)?
If it's the former, literally just rote memorize (or better yet, understand) this chart.

College algebra is just to prepare you for trig and then calc 1 (if you plan on going that far)

>I don't get why we have something from chapter 1 in week fucking 8 and then multiple sections of chapter 3 in weeks 6-7.

Because you don't need to learn everything. The whole point of college algebra is to prepare you for trig/pre-cal. And then calculus 1.

It doesn't really matter if he skips around all the concepts are very basic stuff that shouldn't be too hard to learn. Sit down, read the assigned book or read openstax.org college algebra book and spam practice problems. If ur so confused that u can't even solve the problems then watch lectures on YouTube; there's a ton of resources on college algebra stuff on there.
