KEY POINTS
The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that SpaceX is not yet clear for another test flight of its Starship Super Heavy launch vehicle.
Following a Starship Super Heavy explosion in April 2023, the FAA is conducting a mishap investigation, a standard practice after a “launch anomaly” of such magnitude.
SpaceX will not be authorized to test its 400-foot-tall rocket again until that investigation is complete, and the company takes required corrective actions as determined by the FAA.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday that SpaceX is not yet clear for another test flight of its Starship Super Heavy launch vehicle.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had claimed Tuesday, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) which he now owns, that “Starship is ready to launch, awaiting FAA license approval.”

However, his aerospace and defense company hasn’t met the FAA’s requirements to be able to fly again after an explosion in April 2023 during the first test flight of this vehicle.

>> No.15725891

The Starship launch “anomaly” triggered a mishap investigation that will be overseen by the FAA — a standard practice by the agency, which is responsible for protecting the public during commercial space transportation launch and reentry operations.

In a statement sent to CNBC on Wednesday night, the FAA said: “The SpaceX Starship mishap investigation remains open. The FAA will not authorize another Starship launch until SpaceX implements the corrective actions identified during the mishap investigation and demonstrates compliance with all the regulatory requirements of the license modification process.”

At this moment Starship pad at LC-39A is far from completion and when it's finally done, there is no room for expansion. You know what's more interesting? They made the same mistake at LC-39A that they had done at Starbase. There is no water deluge, only a think layer of concrete that will have to be excavated.

Yet, US is indirectly engaging with another nuclear force in a proxy war. Which means Russia can potentially retaliate against Ukraine with nukes if severity of the situation is comprehended. Any nuclear electric power system in the vicinity of Earth is going to be heavier and be bulkier than an equivalent solar power supply. Reactors just can't beat the watts/kg ratio of typical solar panels.

Any electric propulsion vehicle is going to take far longer to get to the Moon and back than any chenical stage. Using that tech to go to the Moon is extremely sub optimal, it's just a method of coping by those who don't have the launch vehicle economics to do distributed launch chemical propulsion architecture.

Basically this tug is a diversion and will never be built or used.

in my opinion the tech progression for Moon missions will go directly from all-chemical to fusion propulsion, because fusion is the only thing that has a chance to be operationally superior in this use case. Electric propulsion may find a niche in Mars/NEO transport architectures, but those may also go straight to fusion propulsion, either as an upgrade from chemical or as an enabling technology.

If carbon restrictions ever get really tight in the future (i.e anything that produces CO2 when burned is banned outright), we should unironically turn to Ammoniox fuel.

Ammonia (NH3) is both dirt cheap, storable at room temperature (under pressure), and releases no carbon when burned with LOX. However, it produces ozone-damaging NO if burned fuel rich, so it would have to be burned oxidizer rich.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure but it’s always been my stance that she is one of the main reasons SpaceX get so, so, so much business. She probably has direct say in hiring all these old NASA/DoD boomers that SX have acquired (who are there to get contracts, not slow down the company the way BO is run), she probably had a main-say in skipping F1 and going straight to F9, booster reuse, and ultimately upgrading Falcon XX to BFR. And she’s obviously involved with spook deals that help the money flow—as she has openly talked about these a lot before. I think Elon is good at getting rich ass investors and learning as much from his engineers as he can do he can make final design choices; but shotwell is mommy money printer as well.
I wonder how much Insprucker does for the company besides just narrating kino launches. I have no info about him other than what he used to do in the government

I’m a 2. It’s so fucking cool that it has been built so fast, and already attempted a launch. But I think until it either gets to orbit, does a refill test, or successfully lands HLS moonship on the lunar surface during the demonstration mission, Saturn V is still king. For now.

Party stance has flipped. Things like free speech was cherished by establishment left/far left just a decade ago and had been for decades. Now its considered a threat to (((our democracy))). They were the ones censoring the covid lockdowns, promoting ivermectin, effectiveness of masks, the hunter biden stories, the ukraine war narrative skepticism, the vaccine side effects, etc. If you had any thoughts sounding these, you were labeled as right wing terrorists by FBI. FBI has ~200-300 people monitoring social media. Since twitter files expose, this wing was largely shutdown on twitter side of things, but facebook/others still have couple hundreds more. Recently, the US military got into the censorship game.

https://americanmilitarynews.com/2023/09/us-military-using-ai-to-stop-disinformation-threats-on-social-media/

Which means anyone speaking against the (((current narrative))) is a threat to the US government.

An hour before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, it used a massive malware attack to disable the routers of the American satellite company Viasat that provided communications to the country. The command system of the Ukrainian military was crippled, making it almost impossible to mount a defense. Top Ukrainian officials frantically appealed to SpaceX founder Elon Musk for help, and the deputy prime minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, used Twitter to urge him to send Ukraine terminals so it could use the satellite system that the company had built. “We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations,” he wrote.

Musk agreed. Two days later, 500 Starlink terminals arrived in Ukraine. “We have the U.S. military looking to help us with transport, State has offered humanitarian flights and some compensation,” Gwynne Shotwell, Musk’s president at SpaceX, emailed him. “Folks are rallying for sure!”

“Cool,” Musk responded. “Sounds good.” He got on a Zoom call with President Volodymyr Zelensky, discussed the logistics of a larger rollout and promised to visit Ukraine when the war was over.

>In the end, with Shotwell’s help, SpaceX made arrangements with various government agencies to pay for increased Starlink service in Ukraine, with the military and CIA working out the terms of service. More than 100,000 new satellite dishes were sent to Ukraine at the beginning of 2023. In addition, Starlink launched a companion service called Starshield, which was specifically designed for military use. SpaceX licensed Starshield satellites and services to the U.S. military and other agencies, allowing the government to determine how they could and should be used in Ukraine and elsewhere.

Shotwell is based, based beyond belief.

Also notice how every major mainstream media fails to mention Starshield because they want to drum up this scandal with Starlink as if its ongoing, as if SpaceX and Elon still have control over how Starlink is used for military ops. When its a story that already happened and has been resolved with Starshield.

At its most efficient, MOXIE was able to produce 12 grams of oxygen an hour – twice as much as NASA’s original goals for the instrument – at 98% purity or better. On its 16th run, on Aug. 7, the instrument made 9.8 grams of oxygen. Fuck JPL, any retard nowadays can make a cubesat, all you need is funding for the flight. Starship will both drop flight cost and allow for massive rideshare for even less cost to each individual satellite. One Starship mission to Uranus or Neptune could release a swarm of small satellites to stay in orbit and gather data, meaning even postgrads could get their dinky little satellites flown, or you could have a major institution like Harvard buy out a flight and have a large probe sent there for cheap. How will things change if the conflict continues? >The first flight test of a fully integrated Starship and Super Heavy was a critical step in advancing the capabilities of the most powerful launch system ever developed. Starship’s first flight test provided numerous lessons learned that are directly contributing to several upgrades being made to both the vehicle and ground infrastructure to improve the probability of success on future Starship flights. This rapid iterative development approach has been the basis for all of SpaceX’s major innovative advancements, including Falcon, Dragon, and Starlink. SpaceX has led the investigation efforts following the flight with oversight from the FAA and participation from NASA and the National Transportation and Safety Board.
>Starship and Super Heavy successfully lifted off for the first time on April 20, 2023 at 8:33 a.m. CT (13:33:09 UTC) from the orbital launch pad at Starbase in Texas. Starship climbed to a maximum altitude of ~39 km (24 mi) over the Gulf of Mexico. During ascent, the vehicle sustained fires from leaking propellant in the aft end of the Super Heavy booster, which eventually severed connection with the vehicle’s primary flight computer. This led to a loss of communications to the majority of booster engines and, ultimately, control of the vehicle. (1/2)

>SpaceX has since implemented leak mitigations and improved testing on both engine and booster hardware. As an additional corrective action, SpaceX has significantly expanded Super Heavy’s pre-existing fire suppression system in order to mitigate against future engine bay fires.
>The Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) automatically issued a destruct command, which fired all detonators as expected, after the vehicle deviated from the expected trajectory, lost altitude and began to tumble. After an unexpected delay following AFSS activation, Starship ultimately broke up 237.474 seconds after engine ignition. SpaceX has enhanced and requalified the AFSS to improve system reliability.
>SpaceX is also implementing a full suite of system performance upgrades unrelated to any issues observed during the first flight test. For example, SpaceX has built and tested a hot-stage separation system, in which Starship’s second stage engines will ignite to push the ship away from the booster. Additionally, SpaceX has engineered a new electronic Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system for Super Heavy Raptor engines. Using fully electric motors, the new system has fewer potential points of failure and is significantly more energy efficient than traditional hydraulic systems.
>SpaceX also made significant upgrades to the orbital launch mount and pad system in order to prevent a recurrence of the pad foundation failure observed during the first flight test. These upgrades include significant reinforcements to the pad foundation and the addition of a flame deflector, which SpaceX has successfully tested multiple times. (2/3)

Interesting. I wonder was it because of the Fondag or the thrust puck wasn't fuel-proof enough?

>Testing development flight hardware in a flight environment is what enables our teams to quickly learn and execute design changes and hardware upgrades to improve the probability of success in the future. We learned a tremendous amount about the vehicle and ground systems during Starship’s first flight test. Recursive improvement is essential as we work to build a fully reusable launch system capable of carrying satellites, payloads, crew, and cargo to a variety of orbits and Earth, lunar, or Martian landing sites. The one really interesting thing about Starship is that its forcing all other players to start evaluating similar solutions to keep up. Which means they have to go big and build frequently at the same pace or as close to as. If Maxar can already see this now, this means that adversarial nations attempting similar capabilities will stick out as a sore thumb even more, giving the US more advantageous data within NatSec space.

Optimize it the best you can as a thought experiment, reduce cost and increase efficiency. How much can you alter it before it stops looking like it does now? I'd start with the engines, there must be a cheaper RS-25 variant that isn't designed for reuse, that'd take at least some of the cost out.

>During ascent, the vehicle sustained fires from leaking propellant in the aft end of the Super Heavy booster, which eventually severed connection with the vehicle’s primary flight computer. This led to a loss of communications to the majority of booster engines and, ultimately, control of the vehicle. SpaceX has since implemented leak mitigations and improved testing on both engine and booster hardware. As an additional corrective action, SpaceX has significantly expanded Super Heavy’s pre-existing fire suppression system in order to mitigate against future engine bay fires.

Russia faced the same dillemma a decade ago.

They could either sell their engines to China, while making money/PR/geopolitical gains OR they could let China adapt stolen US/European engines, then have them surpass Russian engines and finally come without any gains on Russian side. Russia chose the most optimal choice of selling/working with China because they had no real loss there. They chose to work with the Chinese knowing the alternative is a greater loss.

Launch license VOL 23-129 for Starship authorized SpaceX to conduct one launch. SpaceX
is required to apply for a modification to the VOL 23-129 license to allow for subsequent
launches. When SpaceX applies for this modification, it will need to demonstrate
compliance with 450.173(f) by evidencing the implementation of corrective actions adopted
in response to its April 20, 2023 mishap. If FAA approves the modification, SpaceX will be
required to conduct licensed activities in accordance with the representations made in its
application (450.211). Failure to do so is grounds for enforcement. Once the FAA
determines SpaceX has implemented the corrective actions directly tied to public safety, the
agency will consider SpaceX to be in compliance with 450.173(f).
Further, the FAA’s closure of the mishap investigation does not predetermine the results of
any ongoing or future environmental reviews associated with Starship operations at Boca
Chica.

As usual, Berger is dead retarded wrong. First gaps between F9 flights 1 and 2 was 187 days. 2 to 3 was 531 days (longest gap). and then flights 5 to 6 was 212 days. it wasnt until about 2016, 6 years after the first flight in 2010, that spacex consistently launched F9 less than 100 days between, excluding anomolies.
For comparison, it has been 141 days since starship flew, and we can probably expect roughly a month more delay to 171 days, which puts it close to the delay between the F9 flights 1 and 2. The cadence ramp up for Starship will be excruciatingly slow

Military age = breeding age. They should've done that at the beginning of the war.
The future of Ukraine as a viable country hinges on maintaining sea access. This means taking back Crimea so as to deny Russian fire control over the shipping lane going to Odessa. If 50% of Ukrainians die for this it's still worth it.

More common than you might think.
Asteroids can be fragments of larger bodies, but as a general rule they don't have enough gravity to compact into a sphere. This allows small collections of "pebbles" to collect into what would outwardly look like a solid object. One of the ways it is possible to tell if an object is a rubble pile is its rate of rotation. As an object gets spun by the yorp effect if will eventually shed mass that reaches escape velocity and thus slow back down. This is much easier to do on a rubble pile and it means they rotate more slowly on average
