The Amish have stronger selection pressures than people subjected to more complex civilization, their culture also has some eugenic effects to it, conscientiousness is encouraged and those without it leave the group voluntarily.

When civilization collapses to small remnants as happens at the fall of Rome, Amish communities will become some of those remnants .

So...did no one actually read the article?
It's talking about a mutant gene found in *some* members of the Amish community that enables them to live 10 years longer than their peers, however the gene is present in other humans as well, it just happens to be more present in the Amish.
>Individuals carrying a single non-functional copy of the gene SERPINE1 live an average of 10 years longer than other members of their communities, according to new research.
>Of the 177 people tested, 43 had the mutation. In the general population, Dr Vaughan said, similar mutations might occur at a rate of around one in 70,000 people.
>“We’re talking about something that appears to have an effect at molecular levels, at hormonal levels, at tissue levels, and plays out with people having a longer lifespan,” said Dr Vaughan.
>The mutation results in longer telomeres – caps at the end of DNA strands that protect the chromosomes. Shortening of telomeres has been implicated in the process of ageing, which may explain the mutation’s life-enhancing effects.
>Two copies of this non-functional gene, however, have quite the opposite effect. Instead of protecting individuals from disease, it is linked with excessive bleeding following injury.
>The fact that Amish people tend to be more interrelated than the wider population owing to their insular communities might explain the relative prevalence of the SERPINE1 mutation.

tl;dr inbreeding and lack of medical care culling those with weak genes enabled their community to have healthier bodies.

It's a tricky subject. On one hand, modern medicine combined with a healthy lifestyle leads to the blue zone areas where people consistent hit ages of 90's and 100's. I would also not refuse medical help for my family if they got hit by a car or something.
On the other hand it keeps undesirable traits in the gene-pool and enables extremely unhealthy lifestyles that would have otherwise been mended out of urgency of seeing people die en-mass to it. Kinda like how antibiotics allow farmers to raise cattle in cheap but horrible conditions without running the risk of diseased meat. Of course it's an extreme example and society is not that bad just yet, but it's similar.
I am however very curious how weak our bodies could possibly get and how dependent we could become on medicine just to function normally before it explodes in our face. Unfortunately I probably won't be around to see it.

you want to use plants primarily for their polyphenols, flavnoids, and micro nutrients, theyre basically containing almost no other nutrients humans especially need, the rest you want to get from meat. This is the ancestral diet also referred to as keto sometimes, but the important part isn't adherence to the diet, but the fact that animal products especially organ meat and other prized flesh is dense with most nutrients even compared to the best plants which were only around recently. Anyway because plants and bad animal raising practices often lead you to consuming a ton of pesticides you are pretty much screwed either way, but you can grow your own if you have tiime. avoid buying too many vegetables from the store unless its something you cant grow. avoid all seed oils and oils high in omega 6 polyunsaturated fats like canola, sunflower, and basedbean

Carrots, potatoes and onions are great for you, in spite of the "anti-nutrients" found in their skin. Herbs like garlic, turmeric, black pepper, etc. have also been linked to a myriad of health benefits and longevity.
I'm not against meat, but the reality is that the longest living places on earth don't eat that much of it, which means anything that you might consider "essential meat nutrient" can either be supplemented from somewhere else, or as little as 5% of meat in your diet is enough to fulfill them. Which makes sense, we're omnivores, we adapted to live in places with both high and low availability of either plants or meats.

t. /fit/ck/ obsessed with living longer who researched every possible diet including the keto/atkins, carnivore, ray peat and whatever meme diet you can think of. Researchers often have convincing arguments about why carbs bad or milk bad, but then you look at data and see fucking italians eating just pasta in 50% of their diet, okinawans eating nothing but sweet potatoes with tofu, etc. Try being analytical and draw your own conclusions.
One thing I fully endorse meat for is muscle gains, it's nearly impossible to get big without animal products, without resorting to supplements. However weight lifting has also been associated with lower lifespan, all the centenarians were skinny and lived low stress, "low burn" lives without a lot of strenuous physical effort, you gotta pick your battles. If you live in modern society you probably can't afford a centenarian diet because your body needs the energy from carbs and meat to move boxes in your amazon warehouse job.

>> No.15723671

>>15723626
>carrots and potatoes and onions are great for you
unfortunately you cannot make a bulk of your diet on them throughout prehistory. I dont disagree that they have advantages, but the idea that they should form the bulk of a diet is pop science at best.

the latter category like herbs are another thing but I think you are forgetting a key factor in most use of plant matter through out the ages, particularly durring civilization. Vegetables of that nature where more than a source of food, they where a source of water. potatoes, carrots, and especially oniions all contain a ton of water, and fruits even more so. the sugar and carbohydrates that come with thehm are desirable by humans but no so much healthy for us, nor something we could rely on in times past the tail end of the neolithic revolution.

Studies refer to the centenarians and old people who grew there, Okinawa is a big place obviously and fairly popular with tourism from other parts of japan as well, which caused their diet to start changing lately.
>Specifically, the Okinawans circa 1950 ate sweet potatoes for 849 grams of the total 1262 grams of food that they consumed, which constituted 69% of their total daily calories.
> In the 21st century, the shifting dietary trend coincided with a decrease in longevity, where Okinawans actually developed a lower life expectancy than the Japanese average.

The key with the Amish is that they carefully consider new technology, and how it will impact their community; they also let outsiders use it first. They have no problem using modern tech if it meets those condition; for example trauma care has gotten really good, and is only something you use intermittently, so they have no issue sending people who fall off roofs or get hit by cars to the ER for treatment. Stuff like prepackaged food made in a factory they avoid, as they do not want to be dependant on outsiders for a basic good that you constantly need, like food. Avoiding the cheap, calorie dense, low saity foods science has produced is by far the biggest reason for their better health.

I actually have a fairly solid Amish acquaintance that has done a lot of wood working/custom furniture for me. The mantle above my fireplace is actually hand hewn wood/beam from his great grandfather's barn from back in the day. I've been around their community enough to say I'm not an outsider and can joke with them.

They use solar for various electrical activities and can have the council/local church deacons decide if it warrants it. They are also not above using other...technologies via friends :). For example, when I'm there and google items online (for example wood working supplies), I will often purchase it and have him reimburse me. I've also helped him sell items online--so technically he's not using it--but you know...

>>15742978
Yep, while I'm sure that was a tongue in cheek joke, many people think they're Dutch--they're not--they're German (mostly). Pennsylvania Dutch is just a mistranslation/misuse of Deutsch. I've learned a bit of it and it's easy to see the German in it. Their kiddos start speaking Pennsylvania German and then learn English more as a second language. So if you wonder why they speak ponderously sometimes, that's my take away--it's literally a second language for them.

Every Amish person I've met is fit. Fucking serious. Maybe not 6 pack abs, none of that, but even older grandfathers are out chopping wood when I pull up--and while they may have a bit of paunch to them--they're fit and active. Sure, they grow natural but to be honest--sometimes they get GI shit due to that. It's mostly--they are fit--and eat small portions (Except Sundays!!). They chow down when they have services.

COVID smacked the local community I go around pretty badly. They move services every week to a new 'host' and usually it's a machine shop or literal barn sometimes. They sing in very tight spaces. My Amish friend lost 2 relatives, almost lost his dad. They were all very skeptical of COVID initially. Not anymore.

They're very nice people, extremely private and it took a long long while (talking 2 freaking years) before I could joke with him. Once they accept you though, yeah they're just like anyone else--can laugh at themselves and others. One ongoing joke I have with him is every time someone comes over to my house and sees our kitchen table--or office table or whatever--they always ask where I had it made. When I explains the Amish acquaintaince I have, they always say "Oh Amish, they do good work". So I told him this and said, surely even the Amish have a guy that everyone says "Man I hate that he sells Amish made anything, his furniture is junk and I wouldn't sit in one of his chairs if paid to"--and he laughed and said "Oh to be sure, we have a few of those...they tend to market the "Amish Made" label a bit more..so be nervous when you see that thrown around". Every time I get a new piece of furniture or whatever from him, I always comment well Amish do good work when I pick it up and we chuckle.

Last thing I'll say and it seems strange but shit I gotta comment---is the Amish wives. So I've met two Amish women, as in actual met and talked to for a bit, not seen in a window or bought bread from. Holy shit, they're legit PRETTY. And their husbands are legit NOT. Total mismatch in looks, I mean 8/10s married to 3/10s. And those 3/10s just pound babies into them. And no, they don't have arranged marriages. Shit I'm rambling about Amish, aight I'll stop but tl;dr. yeah they're fit/active and yeah they will use modern medicine when it calls for it.

>> No.15745944

lol, yeah...every Amish person I've been around has at least two guns--one rifle and one shotgun. Every Amish man I've ever met that talked hunting/guns has a 30-30 Winchester, it's like the official fucking rifle for the Amish lol. It's a hella good deer and yote rifle, is light, can withstand being tossed around...I get it--it just cracks me up

Never seen a handgun though, I don't think it aligns with their nonresistance (They actually are exempt from military service due to this).
