its pretty easy to figure out what space looks like.
go outside on a clear night and look up. if you want to get fancy, look at a star near the zenith and then look at it again a few hours later when its closer to the horizon and see how much dimmer it looks, use those two data points and some basic geometry to figure out how bright the star would look with no atmosphere in the way.

space looks like the sky at night. there are roughly 6000 stars bright enough to be visible to the naked eye, if the atmosphere wasn't in the way you'd be able to see about 10,000 stars total and thats what space really looks like, 10,000 dots of varying brightness, most very dim, with the brightest one being about 2000x brighter than the dimmest one.
you could also see 3 galaxies outside of the milky way: the two magellanic clouds and andromeda
