I also know there are some masters programs focused on Space Systems (I know JHU and the various defense universities have them) so I may dig through those for textbooks.

Space environment is good idea to start! I researched a lot about the sea system (EM, Acoustic, and Optical properties) since what I was going before this was systems in the water. For context, I am an OR analyst focused into MS&A for requirements development. I was doing a lot to support various requirements analyses, programmatic decisions, and TTP development before for systems in the water for the Navy.

Now it's I'm doing the same for space, except space is way more... Messy. Too many organizations across government imo.

When I was but a wee lad I always wanted to design orbital shuttles. Not like The Space Shuttle shuttles, but vehicles designed for 0g, no-atmo use, possibly built in orbit. Basically cargo frames with variably comfortable operating/living quarters, for going between, say, the ISS and some future Lunar station, maybe quick trips to the Lunar surface. That sort of thing.

Obviously spaceflight was stifled for a few decades but, is it still too early to think there might be a need for such vehicles? An advisor from Embry-Riddle basically told me there was 0 demand for such things because the supporting infrastructure was barely even theoretical, but this was before SpaceX was a twinkle in Musk's eye.

To date there's still no reason to make one even if there were multiple destinations. If you built a shuttle, it would need to be refueled and serviced and repaired in space, all insanely difficult tasks to do in microgravity and extremely labor intensive even with robotic assistance. The safety concerns would be pretty extreme, as without re-entry capability you're stuck on that boat until you're rescued. It's a nice idea, but you're thinking about a future where all those concerns are trivial as opposed to launching complete spacecraft direct to its destination. At best you're talking about some kind of space tug for manned spacecraft, which seems kind of redundant since they will all have their own service modules.

I could see some value in maybe providing some kind of HLS-lite for nations that can only get to LEO, but you're going to be competing with the actual HLS

https://spacenews.com/momentus-cuts-workforce-while-evaluating-strategic-options/

> In an Aug. 14 earnings call about its second quarter financial results, Eric Williams, chief financial officer of Momentus, said that the company reduced its headcount, including both full-time employees and contractors, by 30% late in the second quarter. The move, he said, was designed to “substantially reduce our burn rate while retaining the talent we need to execute our key near-term initiatives.”

> Momentus reported a record quarterly revenue of $1.7 million in the second quarter, the first time it reported revenues of more than $1 million in a quarter. However, the company reported a net loss of $18.8 million and ended the quarter with $21.6 million of cash and equivalents on hand.

> “It is clear that we’ve faced some headwinds in the recent risk-off environment in the market, and seen our stock price reflect that,” Rood said. The company’s shares have traded below $1 for six months, and the company is seeking shareholder approval later this month for a reverse split of between 1-for-30 and 1-for-50 to boost the stock price and avoid delisting from Nasdaq. The company’s shares closed at $0.31 Aug. 15.

the whole wsj article is below

>David Limp, Amazon.com’s devices chief, is planning to retire in the coming months in the latest departure of a longstanding top executive since Andy Jassy took over as CEO two years ago.
>Limp’s planned departure would conclude a tenure of more than 13 years at the e-commerce giant, where he oversees >Amazon’s Alexa and a portfolio of other services and gadgets that have in some cases proven popular but overall have struggled to make money. The Echo device line, in particular, has proven more challenging to monetize in that way, said people familiar with Limp’s plans.
>Limp’s division has been a target of the cost cuts implemented by Jassy that over the past year have shed some 27,000 jobs across the company.
>Limp’s planned exit marks another disruption for the core of Amazon senior leadership known as the S-Team, a number of whose members have departed over the past two years after relative stability on the management team before Jassy took the helm.
>An Amazon spokesman confirmed Limp is leaving before the end of the year.

because the infrastructure for potable water is already in place. you need to airlift water from natural bodies and there is a limited amount of airborne firefighting vehicles and they're generally only used for remote fires away from established infra because 1) they're literally hundreds of times more expensive to operate than a regular fire engine, 2) they aren't as effective per-unit-of-water as on the ground delivery systems, and 3) the delivery rate is piss poor compared to what a regular fire department hooked into hydrants can accomplish.

the reason they used potable water first is because cities don't have any grey water systems; it's clean water or sewage and nothing in between. They used the hydrant water to fight fires at very low effectiveness, completely emptied our the reserve of treated drinking water, and were then forced to run untreated contaminated water through the same system to continue firefighting. Because they ran untreated water through the town's water supply they then needed the boil water advisory and eventually had to flush the system out to decontaminate, which is also a big headache. In the end it didn't even matter much and the firefighting was largely ineffective because it was one of those freak fires where nature says "fuck you, 100+mph winds feeding oxygen to the flames, NO amount of water will put this out"

KVTK's engine was first supposed to power an Energia upper (or side-) stage.
The indian copied the RD-56 in the 90s and managed to fly a copy of it in 2014
The italian copied the RD-0146 and turned it into a methalox engine in the early 2000s and are probably going to make it fly in ~2026 before the KVTK

Out of all RD engines ever made, which could he considered the “best”? 170 is a classic, as is 180. I’m confused about the single-nozzle variants though. There’s a lot of them. 191 seems to be the future of pockocmoc but there’s like a bajillion different variants of this engine alone. I remember an old /sfg/ thread that stated the one used in zenit 3SL (I think?) is the best ORSC kerolox engine ever built. But what goes into choosing if you should use a quad-chamber, a dual-chamber, or a single-chamber? Like what are the advantages here?

RD-107 is trusty af, how many did they make of them? 15,000?
RD-253 is definitely impressive as a large ox-rich staged combustion engine designed in the early 60s
The 170s just feels like needless gigantism that’s only a good idea for truly super heavy launchers. The Soviets or anyone never designed a rocket large enough to really need it; all its applications could have used Clustered nk-33

I like the RD-120 because it became kind of a cheap testing bed for kerozene staged combustion that everyone in the world has been using for the past 30 years
There’s a funny story of how Pratt & Whitney cucked Rocketdyne of the propulsion of the first X-34 despite Rockwell (Rocketdyne owner) having shared prime directorship of the project just because they bought RD-120 for nothing and resold it to NASA at the bullshit price or $100,000 per engine

The 170/180/191/etc is probably the best if you're looking at raw engineering. The 171 has the same pride of place in Russia that the Raptor for SpaceX. The 107/108 are a lot more like the Merlin; they don't have the cutting edge performance but there have been at least a billion of them made and they've built up a ridiculous work resume over the decades.

The quad chamber design was mostly because Glushko couldn't be bothered to solve large scale combustion instability like the F-1 team did, which was a bit strange considering just how autistic the Soviets were willing to get with the rest of their propulsion mad science. The fact that it let them subdivide the engine into double- or single-chamber decedents was an unexpected bonus.

The point of 181 was to be slightly more powerful than the AJ-26/NK-33s and I don’t know the specs off the top of my head but I’m sure it’s slightly less powerful than a 191 to optimize for cost because they were selling these to turn a profit

Diameter is an issue. Since the 171 was designed for the Zenit it's pushing the limits of what's convenient to ship in Russia.

191 is the basic model. 151 was an export model that I think only got sold to Korea once. 181 was a slightly tweaked 191 that got sold to Northrop as a drop-in replacement for the NK-33 on the Antares 200, and the 193 is a simplified 191 for the Soyuz-2-1v after Russia uses up the last of the NK-33 they've still got. The 2-1v uses an RD-0110R for thrust vector control so they proablly just pulled off the gimbling systems. All of the 171's kids and grandkids seem to the same isp listed, but you see slight variations in thrust so I'm sure they've all got some small optimizations for the role they're intended for.

The one I'm interested in seeing used is the 195, because I think that's probably a single chamber version of the RD-175 superengine Energomash was playing around with.

that's great, but that's not what happened.
if a foreign country set up a proxy war in a part of your state, and started cutting them off from the outside world and using soviet era gaslighting tactics on the population, while lying to the rest of the world about where proxy forces got their weapons, would you try to reason with the country that did that?

better yet, the same country gets impatient that their proxy war isn't succeeding as well as they wanted, so they send in their own army with the express purpose to genocide you, ship half of your population to siberia to be replaced with churka's, and terrorize the other half by raping, pillaging and torturing random civil workers like cops and teachers, generally trying to erase your culture and history because they don't think it should exist.

oh even better, after you defend yourselves, this country that invaded you with the intention to erase your people, gets offended that you dare to defend yourself and starts lobbing missiles at your electricity grid, while their commentators on state TV openly laugh at the prospect of lots of people freezing to death because of it.

and on top of all of that, you have smarmy little third party faggots that say:
"you know what guys, you should just make peace with these guys, unconditionally, just let them take the land they've stolen from you btw. you're being really unreasonable not declaring a ceasefire with this country that could evacuate it's army from your land at any time but stubbornly refuses to do so."

How bad at accounting do you have to be to make that statement

Even if it was a "gift" to NASA from Congress (it is not -- NASA pays for SLS's R&D and manufacturing) you would still calculate $/kg in flyaway cost when comparing it to other rockets to get performance

gimbaling is like magic to me, how do they have a flexible connection capable of moving so many thousands of gallons of cryogenic per minute without leaking? and then there's hydrologgs engines that gimbal, like how the FUCK does the entire fuel tank not leak out of that connection?

hasn't the government payed grant money to some spacex rideshare cubesat from a university? that would be negative cost per kilo, or in other words getting payed to launch rather than paying. and spacex gets payed by starlink which is their own company so effectively the same argument but private money instead of government
