There is definitely some questionable reheard in EvoPsych and sometimes I think they extend their evolutionary arguments too far into things that may not have been directly subject to selection, but overall evolutionary psychology is an interesting project, and the goal of studying the evolutionary purpose and function of human cognition and social behavior makes perfect sense.

We evolved certain behaviors because they helped our species or served a purpose at some point. Somethings are just passed down by social training over the generations.

Think of it as a default mode for people, our caveman brain. If you never think about things deeply and just go through life doing what feels natural, you will tend towards these ancient behaviors that no longer help us. We do a lot of the same things our primitive ancestors and even some apes still do, but we rationalize these things and give them new meaning for today.

But. Humans have a special ability to self reflect and go against our biological drives if we consciously choose to. You are not a slave to these things. Animals are slaves to their drives.
