Those are actually cultural rather than anything inherent to being homosex. The bathhouse culture of the late 70s was pretty much "everyone should have anonymous sex with at least a few hundred other dudes" and the idea of using protection was absurd because it was the 70s and STDs were all treatable with penicillin. By the time HIV got noticed in 1980 most of the community already had AIDS and the prevailing view was to just keep having as much anonymous unprotected sex as possible because everyone was going to die anyway, so who cares? This attitude has been maintained as the ideological bedrock of the gay community to the present day.
