>Previous climate studies of tidally locked planets assume the planets are perfectly tidally locked. However, many tidally locked planets are in multiplanet systems where the planets will experience orbital forcing from their neighbors. It should be noted, however, that single-planet systems, multiplanet systems with large orbital spacing, or certain multiplanet architectures may be sufficiently described as near perfectly tidally locked
>Vinson et al. (2019), who conducted a similar analysis as this paper on spin behavior, describe this unique spin state as chaotic. We classify this spin state, generally, as ’tidally locked with sporadic rotation’ (TLSR).
>The TLSR spin state is unique in that the spin behavior is often not consistently tidally locked nor is it consistently rotating. Instead, the planet may suddenly switch between spin behaviors that have lasted for only a few years or up to hundreds of millennia
>the planet may spin 180◦ so that the previous substellar longitude is now located at the new antistellar point, and vice versa.
Imagine chilling on the comfiest longitude on your eyeball planet for 100s of years, and then it starts to rotate. Apocalyptic.

You could also have an eyeball planet where there are no other planets in the star system, that would probably be pretty much safe.

Maybe. It should at the very least be more successful than rocket 3. They stopped trying to make the engines themselves and there are fewer of them and its a more capable rocket on paper.

It already has contracts so hopefully that can keep astra from folding before at least a test flight.

China getting to the moon by 2030 is a perfectly achievable goal with the technology they have now. Their new capsule is well into development, their lander is reasonable, and everything they need to build the LM-10 they already have. One launch stages a lander to lunar orbit and a second sends a crew capsule out to meet it. We could run this exact same mission architecture right now using Falcon Heavy.

The key difference between this and Artemis is that this is only capable of a flags and footprints mission instead of starting an outpost. Then again, you can't really maintain a lunar outpost with SLS either.

this might be off topic but I don't want the illerminerty to come after me if I'm onto something.

what's bothering me is: if Betelgeuse is 10-20+ times larger than our sun, and 600 lightyears away, how is its supernova not a threat to our solar system/atmosphere? the crab nebula was created by a supernova from a star ~10 times larger than our sun, and it's 6000 lightyear across, we're relatively close to Betelgeuse in this framework, and considering how little we know about supernovas, and the recent strange solar system activity, why aren't you science nerds worried about it?

tl;dr - are nearby supernovas the "great filter"? are we about to get sifted? or is space fake and this is the pretextual crisis for one world government and antichrist?

It is 600 light years away. There is no framework where the terms "light year" and "relatively close" coexist.

Well NASA doesn't pay a single dime for Falcon Heavy development. So there's that you need to factor too.

SLS development costs alone will go in ~40+B before we take into account of the SLS hardware itself.

If we assume SLS will launch 20 times before retirement, thats another 2 billion per SLS cost ammortized alone. 20 SLS launched once every 1.5 years = SLS usage well into 2050. I dont think SLS can even survive to 2040 let alone 2050, but lets assume such.

So thats 4.2B + 2B = 6.2B / 150M = 41.33X Falcon Heavy launch x 70 ton to orbit = 2893 ton to orbit.

How hard would it be to remake some older rockets as groups and sell them as cheap alternatives. For example use the proton m as a basis. They aren't that heavy 44-50 tons empty mass which isn't that much. Maybe use some newer materials digital guiding system and some newer production techniques like sls printing for the engine. >Has any work started on whatever engine is replacing Raptor? Or will Raptor 2 just keep getting better over the next decade?
they need to upgrade the ship and booster QDs - the old ones have already been removed - and install new hold-down clamps, likely because booster 9 has much greater engine isolation which would obstruct the old clamps. they're still working on the water deluge plate thing, going to have multiple rounds of testing for that maybe including a static fire. hydraulics are all gone, which is another reason for upgrading the quick disconnects.

raptor 2 is being superseded by raptor 3 eventually, which will have a higher chamber pressure (350+bar vs ~300 for raptor 2) and higher thrust (270 ton vs 230) and it should also be lighter than raptor 2 by about 15% so a huge t/w increase. still the same 327 isp
