You also have to look at how easy natural gas is to get from earth, if methane engines can use lightly purified natural gas then that is again one thing making it more costly relatively on mars, where you have to do it through the use of massive solar farms and the sabatier process. Perhaps if there is an industrial base on Mars already producing solar panels etc, so you don't have to send much mass from the earth to Mars to start doing that, but you still have sabatier vs natural gas from earth.
