https://spacenews.com/nasa-safety-panel-skeptical-of-starliner-readiness-for-crewed-flight/

> Speaking at a May 25 public meeting of the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, Patricia Sanders, chair of the committee, expressed skepticism that NASA and Boeing will be able to close known issues with Starliner in time for a launch currently scheduled for as soon as July 21.

> “It is imperative that NASA not succumb to pressure, even unconsciously, to get CFT launched without adequately addressing all the remaining impediments to certification,” she said, adding that any decision to accept risk for the short-duration CFT flight should not justify accepting it for later operational flights lasting up to six months.

> “Given the number of remaining challenges to certification of Starliner, we strongly encourage NASA to step back and take a measured look at the remaining body of work with respect to flying CFT,” she concluded, arguing that the agency should bring in an independent team, such as from the NASA Engineering and Safety Center, “to take a deep look at the items on the path to closure.”

https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/05/a-new-report-finds-nasa-has-spent-an-obscene-amount-of-money-on-sls-propulsion/

> The 50-page report analyzed contracts that NASA has given to Aerojet Rocketdyne, for RS-25 main engines, and to Northrop Grumman, for solid-rocket boosters. The engines and boosters power the first stage of the Space Launch System rocket, which made a successful debut flight in November 2022. The rocket will launch astronauts for the Artemis missions to the Moon.

> The report found that efforts to refurbish RS-25 engines, manufacture new ones, and produce solid rocket boosters for the initial Artemis missions have resulted in about $6 billion in cost increases and more than six years in schedule delays compared to NASA's original projections.

>To put this into perspective, Martin is talking about the cost increases, not the total cost of the engines and boosters. This means that overruns for the propulsion system of the SLS rocket alone are costing the space agency about as much as it will spend on developing two reusable lunar landers—SpaceX's Starship and Blue Origin's Blue Moon.

> There are other head-scratching issues raised by the report. For example, the current cost of manufacturing a new RS-25 main engine—which will be used for the Artemis V mission and onward—is about $100 million. NASA and Aerojet are trying to achieve a 30 percent cost savings by the end of this decade, bringing the cost down to $70.5 million.

>Compared to the private sector, even getting the cost of an RS-25 engine down to $70.5 million is a preposterously high price. Blue Origin manufactures engines of comparable power and size, the BE-4, for less than $20 million. And SpaceX is seeking to push the similarly powerful Raptor rocket engine costs even lower, to less than $1 million per engine.

https://spacenews.com/orbit-fab-selects-impulse-spaces-orbital-vehicle-for-in-space-refueling-demo/

> A startup planning to offer in-orbit refueling services, Orbit Fab will seek to refuel the U.S. Space Force Tetra-5 spacecraft with up to 50 kilograms of hydrazine. The demonstration, planned for 2025, was funded by the Space Force and the Defense Innovation Unit.

> The Space Force last year awarded Orion Space Solutions a $50 million contract for the Tetra-5 experiment. Three satellites will be stationed in geostationary orbit (GEO) where Impulse Space’s Mira orbital service vehicle will serve as a hosting platform for Orbit Fab’s fuel depot.

> The Tetra-5 satellites and the fuel depot will use Orbit Fab’s refueling port known as RAFTI, or Rapidly Attachable Fuel Transfer Interface. Impulse Space will provide hosting services such as power, communications, attitude control and propulsion for the fuel depot.

>The collaboration with the startup Impulse Space “brings us one step closer to a robust in-space economy supported by a network of fuel depots and fuel shuttles in geosynchronous orbit,” said Adam Harris, Orbit Fab’s chief commercial officer.

When the spinning ball-Earth is finally exposed worldwide for the 400+ year deception it was, Earth's entire population will suddenly be faced with the reality that every government, every space agency, university, secret society, religious organization, mainstream and alternative media outlet have ALL been duplicitous in propping up a monstrous manipulation to fleece and control the masses. The resulting mass mental exodus away from the control system is exactly what humanity needs. Once the flat Earth truth gets out, these lying politicians, spokesmen, reporters and teachers suddenly change from being heralded voices of authority to being ridiculed, shunned and denounced as they deserve. Once the flat Earth truth gets out, these governments, universities, media outlets and other entangled organizations which have long been hard at work weaving this multi-generational ball-Earth myth, suddenly and completely lose all credibility. Once the truth of our flat Earth gets out, so does the truth of these few elite families/societies who have kept this most important and fundamental reality from us for these hundreds of years! Essentially, once the flat Earth truth gets out, so does every other important truth by proxy, because this "mother-of-all-conspiracies" holds under its umbrella literally ALL of the other conspiracies, and exposes them.

I mean the dV costs are smaller I guess, but the transport time is what, like 6 months (or much longer if you want to make it cheaper from dV) instead of a few hours with Starship fast cadence.

You also have to look at how easy natural gas is to get from earth, if methane engines can use lightly purified natural gas then that is again one thing making it more costly relatively on mars, where you have to do it through the use of massive solar farms and the sabatier process. Perhaps if there is an industrial base on Mars already producing solar panels etc, so you don't have to send much mass from the earth to Mars to start doing that, but you still have sabatier vs natural gas from earth.

I don't think its impossible, seems very unlikely though.
Assuming the pic is accurate
dV from Earth -> Earth LEO: 9.4
dV from Mars -> Earth LEO: 10.2, don't know how low it will get with aerocapture
but looking at a few maps like this, it seems to be that Mars -> Earth LEO is higher dV in all of them, the exact number varies a bit
but seems like simply using rockets its not going to make sense

but not sure how you'd land the thing, considering the F9 booster is almost too light for a single Merlin, let alone Raptor
maybe with a handful of Kestrels from Falcon 1 (reworked to throttle and relight)
but if you're doing all that design work, you might as well throw it to fixing "failed" Starship instead

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3221831/china-supersizing-its-rocket-industry-and-its-coming-starlink

long article by South China Morning Post
> The South China Morning Post (SCMP), with its Sunday edition, the Sunday Morning Post, is a Hong Kong-based English-language newspaper owned by Alibaba Group.[2][3] Founded in 1903 by Tse Tsan-tai and Alfred Cunningham, it has remained Hong Kong's newspaper of record since British colonial rule.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_China_Morning_Post

> The country is constructing an unprecedented rocket assembly plant capable of producing 50 Long March 8 rockets a year, according to scientists involved in the project.

> Once completed next year, the mega factory on the tropical island Hainan will nearly double China’s annual launch capacity – already one of the world’s largest.

> The Long March 8 is a low-cost, non-reusable rocket that can house more than 20 Starlink-sized communication satellites. China intends to use the medium-sized launch vehicle, which has seen two successful test launches, to send more than 1,000 satellites into space every year, comparable to the current pace of SpaceX.

> But the new rocket is also designed to put satellites in a higher orbit than the Starlink satellites. The more advantageous altitude would allow Chinese satellites to monitor or even suppress their American rivals.

> The race to “build a giant satellite constellation is driving China’s space industry into a new age”, said Song Zhengyu, a senior rocket scientist with the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), who is leading the Long March 8 team, in a paper published in the Chinese Journal of Astronautics last month.

> SpaceX has developed an automated system called the “Falcon 9 Integrated Assembly Line” that uses synchronised pulses to move rocket components through the assembly process quickly and efficiently. The method allows SpaceX to produce more rockets at a lower cost than traditional methods.

> It costs about US$3,000 to put 1kg (2.2 pounds) of cargo into low-Earth orbit (LEO) using the existing Long March rockets, similar to that of SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 rockets, according to a recent report by researchers at the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the nation’s largest rocket manufacturer.

> By using the latest digital design and simulation tools, “the development cycle was shortened by 12 months, and a large amount of test funds were saved”, the team said in the paper.

>Long’s team said that the Long March 8 rocket is optimised to send satellites to the sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) at an altitude of 700km (435 miles), higher than most Starlink satellites, which operate at about 550km.

In case of unexpected readings from sensors, the space had built in safety mechanisms to filter out those sensor data and assume they're wrong. So due to those unexpected readings from the sensors, it was ignored entirely and the craft continued to operate nominally.

In other words, the system didn't know which sensors to trust and discarded the outlier as wrong. Obviously, the outlier was the right one.

https://spacenews.com/spacex-investment-in-starship-approaches-5-billion/

> WASHINGTON — SpaceX will have spent $5 billion or more on its Starship vehicle and launch infrastructure by the end of this year, according to court filings and comments by the company’s chief executive.

> SpaceX filed a motion with federal district court in the District of Columbia May 19, asking to be added as a defendant in the lawsuit filed by several environmental and Native American groups against the Federal Aviation Administration May 1. That suit alleges the FAA improperly carried out an environmental review of SpaceX Starship launches from Boca Chica, Texas.

> To make that argument, the company included a statement from Bret Johnsen, chief financial officer at SpaceX. He said that, if the plaintiffs win, the company’s ability to generate revenue from Starship launches for both NASA and commercial customers “would be substantially delayed and jeopardized.”

> He specifically noted that since a 2014 “record of decision” by the FAA, allowing SpaceX to develop launch facilities at Boca Chica (originally for the Falcon family of launch vehicles), “SpaceX has invested more than $3 billion into developing the Boca Chica launch facility and Starship/Super Heavy launch system.”

> “It’ll probably be a couple billion dollars this year, two billion dollars-ish, all in on Starship,” he said, adding that he did not expect to have to raise funding to finance that work. He also said in that conversation that he expected Starship to launch four to five more times this year and “would be surprised” if the company didn’t achieve orbit by the end of the year.

> The SpaceX motion to intervene is one of the few updates since the suit was filed. The court set a July 1 deadline for a “responsive pleading” from the FAA.

I was thinking: the Mars air does have co2 but probably contains contaminations that the colonists wouldn't want to bring into their air supply. Co2 would be more effective to bring than o2 since you can use it to feed plants and then have the plants turn the co2 into o2. Any shipment to Mars will have air in it, you could just replace the atmospheric air mixture to just be co2 for more efficiency.

Hullo's summary of the Hakuto R autopsy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JlUnOAiMm4
tl;dw: edge case in software made the lander ignore the radar altimeter

>according to the team, what happened was during the approach towards the landing site the vehicle passed over a crater with steep sides, and all the time the radar altimeter is pinging this thing and it sees the altitude suddenly change by three kilometers as it passes over a steep cliff, and the software says "wait a second, the rate of change of the altitude shouldn't be this much; I think that this sensor is broken" and so like any well-programmed piece of software it began to ignore the spurious data - except that the data was actually correct.
>the spacecraft thought the surface of the Moon was about five kilometers higher than it actually was, and so the control software did a perfect job of setting this thing down at its altitude where it thought the lunar surface was and then it just sat there balanced on its rocket motor slowly descending waiting for the moon surface to come up and greet it, and before long it ran out of propellant - at that point it actually ran out of propellant asymmetrically and it began to spin, by the looks of things; but yeah it basically fell those five kilometers to the surface

Diverging section: After passing through the converging section, the exhaust gases enter the diverging section of the nozzle. The diverging shape of the nozzle helps to maintain the supersonic flow of gases and maximize the thrust.

Part of me strongly suspects that part of the reasons behind the actual delay of the cybertruck is because the coexistence of SpaceX/Tesla technology agreements, means that NASA may have gotten a glimpse of some of the design ideas behind that truck and were like "yo, this is basically a lunar rover."

And so Tesla's design path has been altered a little bit so that the product transition into being able to put that truck on moon or mars being a simple switch led to such "delays".

He even proposed a better version of MOOSE, this shit is cool as fuck.

>Let's Scotch tape our solar radiation shade and solar panels to the side of this vehicle that will be supersonic in the atmosphere
>Whose idea was this

The part that ripped off in the supersonic airstream was a micrometeroid shield first and foremost. For micrometeroid shields to be effective, they have to have a gap between the shield and the underlying spacecraft that it's protecting. To do this, they designed the micrometeroid shield like a giant springform cake pan. It was clamped down tight around Skylab for ascent, and then in space, the clamp was supposed to be opened, causing the shield to spring out, increasing its circumference and creating a gap of a few centimeters between it and the spacecraft.
This was of course far too flimsy and complicated and it ripped right off.
After that, they continued to build micrometeroid shields with a gap underneath, but the outer panels are mounted securely and not meant to pop off or change shape in any way.
