How is trying to make hydrogen storable not just a fools errand? it's the lightest element, and by definition slips through any material you can think of easily, it causes embrittlement, and I think ignition mentioned that wherever you store hydrogen, you end up getting two types of it with different properties.

There's no straight answer to that. Liquid hydrogen only stays liquid at roughly 20 Kelvin, so you need to make sure it doesn't get too hot or too cold against whatever the incoming heat or outgoing cooling is doing to your tank contents. It depends where you are and what your tank shape is.

> Rocket Lab successfully bid $16.1 million for the company’s headquarters in Long Beach, California, which is about 140,000 square feet, the spokesperson said. Although founded in New Zealand, Rocket Lab was already a neighbor of Virgin Orbit, with a headquarters and facilities in the Long Beach area. Additionally, Rocket Lab’s purchase includes assets such as 3D-printers and a specialty tank welding machine.

> Stratolaunch was awarded its $17 million “stalking horse” bid for Virgin Orbit’s 747 jet. A Stratolaunch spokesperson, in a statement to CNBC, said the company “continually evaluates ways to increase our capacity to meet the imperative for testing hypersonic technologies via leap-ahead flight demonstrations.”

> Launcher, a subsidiary of Vast Space, is purchasing the company’s facility in Mojave, California — as well as some machinery, equipment and inventory — for $2.7 million. Virgin Orbit’s Mojave leases include infrastructure such as rocket-engine test stands and an aircraft hangar.

Personally, I'm not even trying to go directly into aerospace at the moment. Just doing electrical engineering in a non-aerospace setting out of a state that doesn't have much of an aerospace industry at the moment, and hoping that starship will eventually expand the aerospace industry enough that there will be some opportunities in my state eventually.

Eastern seaboard or gulf coast states would be your best open then.

There's also Virginia. NOVA distorts Virginia politics but they’re managed to keep that tumor contained pretty well lately, and if things get too bad they’ve always got the county-level option to leave the commonwealth and join West Virginia. Wallops is pretty small for a spaceport right now, but Rocket Lab is building out their Neutron facilities and the Space Force has been saying that Cape Canaveral is just about sold out of launch pad space, so they’re likely to get more neighbors than just Northrop-Firefly in the near future.

camera technology can never be good enough to get rid of UFOs because as soon as it gets good enough to identify a UFO it stops being a UFO. The gimbal footage shows an object several miles away. someone with a phone camera would not have even spotted it to take out their camera. And if you used the gimbal ir camera for most cell phone videos you would immediately recognize the UFO as a helicopter or a balloon or a b21 or whatever.

https://www.supercluster.com/editorial/seti-scientists-to-devise-plan-for-lunar-listening-station

> The study grew from a paper submitted by researchers from Breakthrough Listen, the world’s largest SETI program, to the National Academy of Sciences’ 2020 Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey that made the case for a SETI observatory on the lunar farside. Now, with additional support from Breakthrough Listen, an international coalition of SETI researchers will take the rough sketch presented to the Decadal Survey and use it to create a detailed plan for what this mission would actually look like.

> “The benefits of a technosignature observatory on the lunar farside were identified early on in SETI, but it was just not thought to be a credible prospect because of the very large costs involved with putting anything on the moon,” said Andrew Siemion, the Director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center and a leader of the Phase A study. “That recently changed for a number of reasons, but I think most importantly the advent of commercial spaceflight dramatically reduced the cost of bringing a payload to the lunar surface, which has fueled something of a renaissance in lunar astronomy.”

> “We really needed to undertake a formal Phase A study to figure out what this observatory could look like and what we could do for a reasonable amount of money—say $150 or $200 million,” said Siemion. The study is funded by a grant from Breakthrough Listen, a SETI initiative bankrolled by the Russian-Israeli billionaire Yuri Milner, and Siemion says their primary goal is to “identify a credible path forward for a lunar farside radio technosignature mission that could be accomplished in the next five to seven years.” Although Siemion believes that technology has progressed to the point where this ambitious mission is feasible, the devil is in the details.

https://www.supercluster.com/editorial/the-case-for-building-a-seti-observatory-on-the-moon

article about the initial paper referenced

> On Monday, a group of researchers sponsored by Breakthrough Listen, the world’s largest SETI program, submitted a paper to National Academy of Sciences’ Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey that makes the case for establishing a SETI radio observatory on the farside of the moon. The decadal survey establishes scientific priorities for the next ten years and the new paper addresses one of the biggest problems facing the search for extraterrestrial intelligence today: The overwhelming amount of radio interference.

the actual paper:
https://seti.berkeley.edu/lunarseti/

> Earth was never a particularly great place to do any kind of radio astronomy due to our thick atmosphere blocking a large portion of the radio spectrum. The proliferation of radio communication technologies has only made things harder. The moon, by comparison, has no atmosphere and its nights last for weeks on end, which limits radio noise from the sun. And as NASA discovered through a spate of lunar orbiter missions in the late 1960s, the moon also acts as a natural shield that blocks radio signals emanating from Earth. As the planetary astronomer Phillipe Zarka has put it, “the farside of the moon during the lunar night is the most radio-quiet place in our local universe.” It’s exactly the sort of peace and quiet you want if you’re searching for faint radio signals from solar systems that might be hundreds of light years away.

> The new Breakthrough Listen paper proposed two main approaches to a lunar SETI observatory: an orbiter and a telescope on the surface. The basic idea behind a SETI lunar orbiter would be to scan for signals as it passed over the lunar farside and relay data back to Earth as it passed over the near side. One of the main advantages of an orbiter is cost

I’m competing for the annual /sfg/ most retarded question, so here it is:
I get that you need a fuel/oxidizer for a combustion reaction. But, liquid oxygen is explosive. Why can’t rockets omit a fuel and just use lox, flow it past a spark plug, and that’s your energy source.
>inb4 it’s not that easy in thrustery
I just don’t understand why you need both a fuel and an oxidizer when an oxidizing agent is pretty reactive already

But the answer is yes, yes you can - you use flouride - however that will make a highly toxic propellant not to mention all the other issues with using flouride. Its just more complexity for something which is theoretically as efficient as H2O

Liquid oxygen is explosive when it touches something. Like your hand. Or kerosene.

>> No.15459888

>>15459878
The oxidizer is very reactive, but it still needs something to react with. Chemical rockets get their energy from a chemical reaction (sorry for stating the obvious). Specifically, an exothermic reaction that will liberate energy stored in the chemical bonds between atoms in your reactants.

ex. H2 + O2 -> H2O + energy

Set up the chemical equation and it's pretty obvious: If you just have a big tank of O2 or whatever, there's no chemical reaction to be had, and therefore no energy to be released.

O2 + nothin' -> O2 + nothin'

>> No.15459890

>>15459878
>But, liquid oxygen is explosive.
that's like asking why Jupiter doesn't explode when a meteor hits it, because it is made mostly out of hydrogen. Answer: no oxidizer. For your question the answer is: no fuel. You need both for combustion.

>>15459878
>Why can’t rockets omit a fuel and just use lox, flow it past a spark plug, and that’s your energy source.
Not OP, but why wouldn't this still work? Not in terms of a combustion reaction, but you would still be adding heat/energy to the exhaust gas. Yeah it's gonna have shit isp, but still.
