how does this work, /sci/?
I'm thinking it's either
>the egg is hidden, even if you don't look to the right the egg is still reflected in the mirror
>the egg only reflected when you look to the right

>the egg only reflected when you look to the right
It's this one. Imagine a ray of light traveling from the real egg, hitting the mirror, and bouncing into your eye.

y?

Or maybe I should clarify that the light from the egg still bounces off the right part of the mirror even if your eye is not there to see it (and in that sense it is still reflected even if you don't look), but none of the light passes from the egg to the part of the mirror on the other side of the paper.

is this a joke
throw a ball at the ground at an angle, and it bounces at that same angle, away from you.
you're bouncing light between your eye, the mirror, and the egg, at an angle.
i mean christ alive, how can you see behind you with mirrors on a car? how does the mirror know what's behind the car????

Open your mind. The problem is that the reflected object is “inside” the mirror—but how does the mirror keep track of its position? Yes you got the answer, but try to understand the question. A lot of paradoxes are like this

It's just quantum tunneling. Light is a wave and a particle and paper sheet is really thin so the tunneling probability is high. The egg just tunnels through the paper

That is a gross misunderstanding
The egg is in no way "inside" the mirror.
You're seeing a 2d projection of the egg at an acute angle. The mirror is not 3d

They're discovering a neat thing about mirrors.

I'm honestly dissapointed peoples amazement is so met with nastiness. This kinda thing is how people get inspired to get into science. Tell them why it actually works and admit it's a neat effect.

You don't want more science-hating conspiracists out there do you?

There's three main components to mirrors
The light source (object), the reflective surface where the light refracts, and the lense (your eye or camera).
The virtual image that you see is perpenticular at the angle of incidence to the light source.
This means, as your collector moves more reflected light from objects is shown in the virtual image. It's important to remember that the rays shoot out in all directions.
Rays from the object are still hitting the mirror and rebounding from the surface into your eye.

If you actually want to know the answer:

Look at the WebM very closely. You will notice the paper is blocking part of the mirror. You cannot see any reflection where the paper is, because the mirror blocks it. But the other parts of the mirror that are not blocked can see the egg, because they are not blocked by the mirror. She has to adjust her angle to see the egg because the other parts of the mirror can only see the egg from an angle. It's a diagonal reflection that appears to be straight because she has to make her angle the same angle as the reflection and then it appears straight, but youll notice that the part of the mirror which reflects the egg is not covered by the paper, meaning that part of the mirror is to the right of the egg, it's not on the other side of the paper, so it's not blocked by the paper.

To explain it simply, if her mirror was the same size as the paper, she would see no reflection because the whole mirror would be blocked by it.

To explain it better.
Light waves are sent from a light source.
Light waves hit the object and reflect onto the paper. Paper is not very reflective and so the light reflected from the paper does not produce a virtual image.
When the collector (camera or eye lense) changes the angle, light waves reflecting off the object, into the mirror and back from the surface into the collector. The collector now has enough information to form a virtual image straight ahead. As the reflected light is perpendicular at the surface of the mirror.

Not true.
But relative to a mirror it is far less reflective

It is untrue but it is not a misunderstanding. It is an incorrect model of the world before you that leads to paradoxes. And yet even the wrong model can act as a simplifying assumption. For example, when I see you behind me in the mirror, I don’t need to worry about the angle of incidence to determine your position: I just look where you are inside the mirror, and I know you are exactly opposite to that. This kind of thing happens all the time and not just in science. That’s why it’s important to be open to alternative, and even wrong, ways of looking at things

The black box in pic related represents the sheet of paper. Think about how the person filming in OP has to put their camera at a shallow/oblique angle to be able to see the reflection of the object "behind" the paper. Think about how light reflects off a mirror at an equal + opposite angle to that which it strikes at.

females are simply retarded and project sentience on the the mirror ("mirror know"). it is basically primitive animistic anthropomorphization applied to psychophysical phenomena. they are so braindead and use their phone cameras so often that they think that a mirror works like a camera/observer.
what actually happens is that the person (in this case including camera) is the observer that acts as a "go-between", and so if the angle allows it, *of course* the light from the egg will bounce against the mirror and then to the eye/camera.
this is trivial and should be obvious. homo sapiens just needs to go extinct, honestly. the next stage in evolution can't come soon enough.
