Midwits with a science degree end up in one of 3 things:
1. Admin work in scientific companies. This includes compliance paperwork, sales, project management, or some other form of secretary/clerical work.
2. Lab assistant or technologist, after doing a community college diploma.
3. Endless academia. Masters, PhDs, postdocs, then some small-time research scientist or admin role. Obviously not smart enough to make professor anywhere.

I don't know about the 'common man' but some immediate engineering applications of QFTs are all in the realm of Condensed Matter physics or QED so stuff like:
- Superconductors
- Semiconductors
- Superfluids
Applications of standard model theories are usually within the realm of QED and deal with situations in spectroscopy or photonics where high-accuracy matters. But this is irrelevant to the pursuit of science which is to make theories that explain phenomena, this doesn't mean they have to be practical.

Inevitably some math or physics undergrads hit a wall their sophomore or junior year, can't go any further with the subject material, and ultimately switch to a different (easier) major. Engineering being lower than physics is not a surprise, but both are in the "gifted but not genius" range, which for an average is HUGE.
Engineering attracts a lot of more mediocre people only in for money, there are a lot more of engineering students than physics students.
Only people with interest in the subject try physics, which is why philosophy is also so high: it's easy as fuck to pass a philosophy course, but if you were an idiot you wouldn't be interested in it in the first place.
A 7 points average proves some very good engineers will be better than some physicists.
