N11 would have been great, and it would have been able to survive the fall of the USSR by becoming the Russian commercial launcher.

Now N1... if its prodction line had continued until 1991 then it'd have flown a few dozen times at least. This completely change soviet spaceflight. IMO the most likely effect is that there is even less soviet effort at satellite miniaturisation, since Lavochkin or Reshetnev or other can just build 20, 30 tons satellites and have them launched once or twice a year. I guess this would mean less soviet ion propulsion R&D which would set the world back on it too. Soviets maybe go ahead with their plans to have ultra heavy GSO comsats (they were planning on launching 3 30 tons comsats with energia in the late 80s). If this actually works this could be copied and become an international business case for N1, but I doubt it. Still it would be a funny opposite to IRL where the 90s were a period of constellation and microlauncher projects.

I guess there would also be some Mars missions attempt, Mars 4NM and Mars 5NM; They'd probably languish in development hell for years and be launched in the 80s and fail. Or some of the bigger project for Venus balloon (instead of the two small balloons of VeGa 1 and 2)

I makes much more sense to me to have a test run where you are only a couple of days away from a resupply if something goes wrong compared to a couple of months. Such damage would have made a controlled descent impossible, with John Young later admitting that had the crew known about this, they would have flown the shuttle up to a safe altitude and ejected, causing Columbia to be lost on the first flight.

Will invariably happen though because setting up a refueling architecture on mars will take longer than the first NASA base.

if the Shuttle C had been funded the US could have had its heavy-lift launcher capability back by the early-80s (could have even flown before the first manned shuttle as the program was delayed a couple of years by the shuttle itself), things like the Hubble, Magellan, Cassini, etc wouldn't have been size/weight constrained like they were, and the ISS could have been something much greater than what we were able to piece together from the shuttle cargo bay (bonus: the Shuttle C would have ensured there weren't a bunch of shuttle engines left sitting around for idiots to demand be included in any shuttle follow-on program)

I agree. It would also be a great test for landing in a low gravity environment. It would also be a good test to make sure that nothing small was looked over during planning. Being closer I feel like it would gather more attention from the average person (hopefully bringing in more funding) because it is something everyone is more familiar with because we can see it easily with the naked eye.

you say that like it's a bad thing
at just a couple of shuttle-C launches per year you could have launched bigger probes/telescopes/science payloads and you would have had the ability to (more like the freedom to) launch fewer manned shuttles per year, and it would have been perfect for putting something simple in orbit (similar to Skylab) that could have been visited by a crewed shuttle a couple/few times a year,

>You could. But if you miss anything in your simulation and the astronauts need assistance/emergency supplys being so far away is almost guaranteed death.

What exactly about being on Earth makes it impossible for you to larp as if you're not on Earth, pressurize your habitat to 0.1 bar above ambient, and run all equipment and operations under those scenario rules? It's just as much of a test of the hardware to run basic ISRU equipment in an Antarctic dry valley as it is on the Moon or Mars.

> but conditions on Earth aren't like Mars
Neither are conditions on the Moon. In fact Mars is more like Earth than the Moon anyway. If you want an accurate test, we have that big temperature controlled vacuum chamber that they used to test fly Ingenuity.

We don't need to live on the Moon to figure out how to live on Mars. We'll probably have a moon base first because of proximity, but the Mars base will be faster growing and more resource rich.

Since I have greater than 90 IQ I'll answer your question: a boostback burn just means the stage is pointed back the direction it came from and is burning in that direction. A boostback may go long enough to actually change the direction of the stage, taking it all the way back to the launch site, or it may target a point in the water close to the launch site, or it may not even reverse its trajectory at all. In this case superheavy is just reducing its velocity to equal a typical entry, except pointed at the ocean downrage instead of completely reversing its trajectory and aiming at the tower.

Nope.
Mars has two kinds of surface radiation: UV and cosmic rays.
The UV is so intense it would kill your skin in minutes, but it's so easy to block UV that it's not even considered a hazard to astronauts (just UV sensitive materials outdoors).
The cosmic rays are highly penetrating, but low dose rate. As a human you don't want to live exposed for a few decades, but plants? They don't give a shit, especially not the annuals (ie most farm crops).

Yeah magnetospheres do literally nothing to divert cosmic rays, they're just too high energy (and gamma rays are unstoppable via magnetic field because of boson magic).
Mars surface is a more benign rad environment than Earth orbit, due to Mars' atmosphere overhead. Low density, but present enough to stop solar charged particles and attenuate some cosmic ray dose rate. Once you're on Mars you can protect your mammals under a nice thick regolith roof, while your plants eat that dose for breakfast.

0.06% of Earth's sea level atmospheric pressure at Mars' datum elevation (it's like sea level for worlds with no surface liquids). Since Mars has low gravity it has both a much taller and more massive atmosphere than would be needed to produce the same pressure on Earth. Similar logic applies to Titan, which has even less gravity than Mars but the second highest pressure atmosphere of any known non gas giant object.

It's not just the rings
> But recent modeling suggests some of Saturn’s moons may be younger, possibly only 100 million years old or less.
>One way scientists can tell the ages of Saturn's is by looking at how closely the moons orbit the planet. A gravitational tug-of-war between planets and their satellites pushes the orbits of satellites outward into space slowly over very long periods of time. (For example, our moon is drifting away from Earth each year at about the rate that fingernails grow.) The recent study suggests that, if Saturn’s moons were as old as the solar system, ones that are close to the rings would’ve drifted much farther away by now. This conclusion conflicts with the apparent age of the moons from their heavily cratered surfaces, but it adds new ideas to the ongoing quest to puzzle out the history of the Saturn system.

How is your country's space industry?

We have some stuff in the works.

Australia has an advantage because our location provides significant savings on fuel, and therefore cost, needed to get into orbit.

>B-b-but China owns you!!
Cope Zhang.
We singlehandedly beat the Germans in Africa, in Greece and beat the Italians in the med. We rolled the Japanese and forced them to eat their dead. The VC feared Australians the most, so did the terrorists in the Mid East. The US marines were shitscared of the Aus special forces.

The ADF projects far more power than it's size and we're also one of the best trained militaries in the world. We'd mop the floor with France and with China.

Australia is economically, militarily, culturally and politically more powerful than China and most of Europe in the Pacific and Asia. We wear the pants in the relationship.

Difference is, unlike the Chinese we are not aggressors. We don't seek anything outside of Australia. The Chinese bullying us draws sympathy to our side and it's why most of SEA and the Pacific sided with Australia and not with China.

By the end of the decade we'll be in China with all of our allies torching Chinese villages and cracking open the skulls of female PLA soldiers with sledgehammers. We have warned China, we've given them generosity, and you too. But again and again China and France have proven that they are dishonourable cowards and cannot be trusted.

WELLLLL Starship is about to be fully operational. A specially built Uranus version could transport a MASSIVE probe out there or maybe drop one off at Uranus then one at Neptune no? Does Starship put a possible Uranus or Neptune orbiter in sight? If you only really need to focus on cost or the orbiter to design while SpaceX takes care of launch for cheap, then whats to stop a rich college like Harvard from making an orbiter then sending it out there with a highly reduced cost? Colleges dont really care about anything except prestige, so if you were the college to supply almost all data known on Uranus, its moons and more which could be used to base on all ice giant exoplanets, then that would be a good reason to go for a Uranus/Neptune probe right?

Terran R infrastructure from coast to coast.

Produced in Long Beach, CA
Tested at @NASAStennis
Launched from Launch Complex 16, Cape Canaveral, FL
Shipped by sea through the Panama Canal to Mississippi for testing and then Florida for launch.

Get up to speed on the…

So Relativity is aiming to survive for 3 years without revenues until the 2026 Terran R launch

Falcon 9 clone
Expendable upperstage
More relying on traditional methods of making rocket instead of 3D printing that they claimed initially
Probably gonna cost similar to Falcon 9 if not more.

>> No.15345770

Interesting that despite having 50% more payload to LEO; Terran R has the same GTO payload as reusable Falcon 9.

>>15345761
>>15345736
Does this confirm Terran R is pushed back to 2026?

Also what a weird choice to pivot to an expendable upper stage. The main attraction of Terran R was its reusable upper stage.

So by the time Terran R is fully operational it will just be Falcon 9 when Starship will probably be shipping off to the Moon? Smallsat launchers are absolutely over.

I guess the 3D printed cheap upper stage has dogshit mass ratio.
Having bad S2 mass ratio really kills performance with a low speed staging reusable S1

Everyone will copy Falcon 9, and by the time they get Falcon 9 right Starship will have gobbled up the entire LEO market and gotten dedicated start up customers. Then the memelaunchers will have to shift to copying Starship which once that is done, we will be on Mars with SpaceX having killed off most competition due to undercutting their prices. Relativity is one of many cases, and will not be the last.

TOTAL MEMELAUNCH DEATH
