I used to like solar panels until I found out that they have an energy return on investment of about ~4. This means that a solar panel in its entire life produces only enough electricity to make 4 more solar panels. In other words if the whole world was solar powered 1/4th of the world's energy would be used to make new solar panels to replace old ones.
