There's a pretty sizable market that exists at 1T to 8T, so RL will definitely have a market to operate in. But that market will last only as far as Starship not being operational. Once SpaceX has the ability to co-manifest payloads at scale, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to keep up. SpaceX has to figure out their payload deployment issue and the structural issues with their ship design (as per latest CSI Starbase video); but once they're over that hurdle and can say get 50T to LEO at half the cost of a Falcon 9. RTLS costs for rideshare will be half of anything RL can offer at the cheapest without basically running negative on flights, and SpaceX would still turn a profit per flight from just a handful of companies. But at 50T, if each payload say was 200kg tops, that's 226 payloads per flight. Assuming no RUD to orbit and assuming say 500k cost for each payload to orbit, that's $113.398M in revenue per flight. If Starship costs say $25M to launch, that's $88.398M in profit or 300% margin per flight.

The limiting factor then won't be Starships or fuel or launch cost or logistics of flight, but of orbital space and deorbiting of expired satellites. RocketLab's Neutron rocket's market existence is as long lived as it takes for Starship to get up to operational cadence. Once that happens, its game over for most small/medium lift providers that are trying to compete internationally. SpaceX will devour it all.

It's just a thought experiment. Reality is that its not going to get to 226 payloads or more per flight. But ultimately, SpaceX like its counter part Tesla, in its respective market has much more operational and cost leverage in the market compared to others trying to compete with it. When SpaceX successfully landed their Falcon 9 for the first time in 2015, should have been the wake up call to make investments to move any existing designs up into a reuse context to try and get the rockets out the door into market and use the upmass cost as R&D to bridge the gap between themselves and SpaceX. We are 7 years into that landing date and the first orbital class equivalent competitor to Falcon 9 Block 4 is expected to have its maiden flight in 2024-2025.

If it takes a decade to realize that competition is about to drive a stake through your heart, you're not long for the world. SpaceX stopped declaring Falcon design blocks, but its probably realistic to assume that Falcon 9 is closer to Block 6 or Block 7 FT now rather than Block5 (2015-2016). They still make the occasional design improvement on the vehicle as they collect more data from each reuse flight that goes into new boosters that get made.

While I wish RocketLab well, I am of opinion that Peter Beck fucked up and waited too lon to transition from Electron to Neutron. The market for that vehicle is going to be very short lived. Probably 3-5 years max, and then they'll start seeing a sharp decline. I said in the previous thread that Starship I think will force everyone to adapt a flat bus design for all payloads moving forward (as much as possible) and optimize for volume rather than mass even if the vehicle's existence allows for big chonky payloads to orbit. As orbits get filled up, collision risk and high velocity debris risks increase exponentially. Physics, necessity, and derisking strategies will force this uniformity.
