Stargates. Stable Wormholes. Jump Drives.

No matter what you call it, it boils down to Instantaneous Delivery to a distant point. I would hardly call it Travel in any sense, as the one who will be transported across the vast distance personally travels very little. Perhaps simply a walk from the bunk to the cabin to initiate a jump, or a short jaunt from the hangar to the stargate.

I digress. Essentially, I'm interested to know if it's possible. Do the laws of physics allow for such a concept to freely exist in reality as we know it?

If so, when will we begin to see this technology?

If not, why?

When wormholes are shown to either exist or not exist, then we will know.

As of now, no. Our current understanding of physics doesn't allow for these jump points to exist without utilising a wormhole.

Assuming that we discover that wormhole exist naturally in the next 100 years, I'd say that we'd maybe see jumpdrive tech within 200 years.

But then, I'm an optimist.

I never said it isn't "Travelling".
I said I would contest calling it "Travel" in that the individual barely walks more than you do to get up of the couch and find a morsel to eat from the icebox. If you were in the confines of a starship and had the controls for a warp jump or something at your fingertips, you wouldn't walk at all. You'd sit in your comfortable chair and push a button. Hardly "travelling" when you compare the physical demands to what was necessary for Lewis and Clark

It is possible man.

The even horizon of the stargate maps out every atom in your body, and the atoms on the other stargate immediately get the signal and form the atoms that are needed.

You die every time you steep trough, but this type of teleportation is possible today... on an extremely tiny scale, also it doesn't involve stepping trough things.

there are trillions of atoms. even with our most powerful computers, it would take centuries to map and store that data.

Each stargate just keeps a stache of biological atoms? Thats highly improbable. The energy demands to store biological matter in a purely atomic state are unprecedented, and putting them together to form biological molecules would generate tremendous, probably uncontainable, amounts of energy and heat.

FTL communication? interesting, but how?
Also, how would you download billions of gigabytes of data instantly? The amount of memory need to cache every bit and position of atomic matter in a human body is almost incalculably enormous.
