I was thinking wouldn't it be great to work on a space station? Like after your day's work you get to shoot the shit with your co-workers, who inevitably also become your friends, so it's a great place to work at. And then afterward you get to go to your bunk and look out the window to see the beauty of Earth.

I suppose this is what it's like working on an ocean ship, or an Antarctic base. Or DS9/Babylon 5.

The tower arms simply there to lift. The attachment points keep the vehicle from swaying. This is why it takes so long for the attachment points to, well, attach in the first place. The vehicle is constantly shifting. Once those are on, it steadies it and allows for the actual stack to happen because they now have some level of precision concerning the placement of the ship over the booster's attachment points. Even with this system they have still had to pick the ship back up and restack it due to being slightly off. I cannot imagine how virtually impossible it is going to be to do this when the ship is swaying back and forth nonstop due to the wind.

That assumes a cost which SpaceX almost certainly won't achieve this decade. Also if they have enough customers then they won't have to worry about waiting around, they can just launch as fast as they can and stuff as many payloads as possible into each one. He's right that if there isn't enough of a market for launches then Starship will absolutely launch at below capacity, even in the first few years when they're going to be ironing out the kinks of reentry/refurbishment and trying to get it crew rated.

I think their original goal of "rocket in a box launched from anywhere, with cryogenic propellant and SpaceX grade telemetry" was always out of reach given the cost constraints of commercial launch. If they'd been given a cost-plus contract to develop it for the military AS a military program, then maybe. That's the sort of wacky bleeding edge capability cost-plus was created for. Absent that, I think the lowered-expectations target that Rocket 3.3 became could have been saved with more rocket-to-ground bandwidth and better vacuum testing of the upper stage hardware. Even absent THAT, if Rocket 4 had started serious development the day after LV0007 to reduce inter-generational gaps I think there would have been a chance, since we didn't know the Rocket 3.3 upper stage flaws were fatal until after LV0010. What's killing Astra is the fact that with a new first stage engine and no prior art of an upper stage that lived up to its paper specs, Astra was effectively starting Rocket 4 development from zero, after the public loss of a NASA payload&contract. They were back to tank prototypes and engine-only static fires. That was a hard sell with low interest rates. Now? Forget it.

This was literally the plan at one point. There was some discussion of using Starship to help bootstrap our own constellation before Rocket 5 was ready. Rocket 4 was being sized to dual-manifest a class of smallsat that included OneWeb satellites so it could at least be used for targeted constellation *maintenance* if not mass rollout. This was to pair with the spacecraft parts and renting time on our constellation, and so on.

Economics of In-Space Industry and Competitiveness of Lunar-Derived Rocket Propellant

>

Economic parameters are identified for an in-space industry where the capital is made on one planet, it is transported to and teleoperated on a second planet, and the product is transported off the second planet for consumption. This framework is used to model the long-run cost of lunar propellant production to help answer whether it is commercially competitive against propellant launched from Earth. The prior techno-economic analyses (TEAs) of lunar propellant production had disagreed over this. The "gear ratio on cost" for capital transport, G, and the production mass ratio of the capital, phi, are identified as the most important factors determining competitiveness. The prior TEAs are examined for how they handled these two metrics. This identifies crucial mistakes in some of the TEAs: choosing transportation architectures with high G, and neglecting to make choices for the capital that could achieve adequate phi. The tent sublimation technology has a value of phi that is an order of magnitude better than the threshold for competitiveness even in low Earth orbit (LEO). The strip mining technology is closer to the threshold, but technological improvements plus several years of operating experience will improve its competitiveness, according to the model. Objections from members of the aerospace community are discussed, especially the question whether the technology can attain adequate reliability in the lunar environment. The results suggest that lunar propellant production will be commercially viable and that it should lower the cost of doing everything else in space.

Rolls-Royce scientists and engineers are to research how nuclear power could be used to support a future Moon base.

The UK Space Agency has given the Derby-based firm £2.9m to look at ways of powering future lunar settlements.

The company has been asked to demonstrate how nuclear micro reactors could extend the duration of future missions to the Moon.

The government said the deal would boost the UK's space industry and create skilled jobs.

The UK Space Agency said it wanted to establish a new power source to support systems for communications, life-support and scientific experiments on the Moon.

The agency's chief executive Dr Paul Bate said: "We are backing technology and capabilities to support ambitious space exploration missions and boost sector growth across the UK.

"Developing space nuclear power offers a unique chance to support innovative technologies and grow our nuclear, science and space engineering skills base.

"This innovative research by Rolls-Royce could lay the groundwork for powering continuous human presence on the Moon, while enhancing the wider UK space sector, creating jobs and generating further investment."

Rolls-Royce said it wanted to have a reactor ready to send to the Moon by 2029.

The company will work with the University of Oxford, University of Bangor, University of Brighton, University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and Nuclear AMRC on the project.

The Minister of State at the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, George Freeman, said: "Space exploration is the ultimate laboratory for so many of the transformational technologies we need on Earth, from materials to robotics, nutrition, cleantech and much more.

"As we prepare to see humans return to the Moon for the first time in more than 50 years, we are backing exciting research like this lunar modular reactor with Rolls-Royce to pioneer new power sources for a lunar base."

Director of future programmes for Rolls-Royce Abi Clayton said: "The new tranche of funding from the UK Space Agency means so much for the Rolls-Royce Micro-Reactor Programme.

"It will bring us further down the road in making the micro-reactor a reality, with the technology bringing immense benefits for both space and Earth."

>Thangavelu suggested that NASA replace the fixed-site lunar base approach with a "roving base" that would, in a single ambitious piloted mission, explore multiple candidate base sites and the terrain between them along an 11,000-kilometer traverse route. He called his roving base Nomad Explorer.
>The chief element of the Nomad Explorer roving base was the 35-tonne Very Long Traverse Vehicle (VLTV), which would measure 16 meters long, 4.5 meters wide, and 10 meters high. The VLTV would roll on four large wheels, each powered independently by a 120-horsepower electric motor. The complex wheels would change shape automatically to accommodate obstacles and ensure a smooth ride. Typically, the VLTV would move at about 20 kilometers per hour, though it could trundle along at up to 30 kilometers per hour if necessary.
>The VLTV would provide its three-person crew with 600 cubic meters of pressurized volume. It would include a control cockpit, crew quarters, a meeting room/galley, an airlock, and a hygiene facility.
>Thangavelu proposed a novel system for providing the Nomad Explorer roving base with electricity — an automated "power cart" bearing a nuclear reactor that would follow about a kilometer behind the VLTV to limit crew radiation exposure. It would supply 50 kilowatts of electricity to the piloted rover either through a long durable cable or through intermittent microwave beaming. An auxiliary fuel cell/solar cell system on the VLTV would provide 10 kilowatts of backup electricity.

Another thing to consider is the fact that starship's $/kg will likely change the way sattelites are built.

Right now there are sattelite 'buses' which you can start building a sat from, but 99% of all launches still have a ton of expensive, bespoke, 'aerospace grade' shit stuffed in them, because they need to be as light as possible.

If starship outbids all the comptetitors for cost (which it apparently will), suddenly the buyer now has 100t of mass to play with. They no longer need their expensive memetech aluminum isogrids. They can now make a sattelite which is a tenth the cost by slapping off the shelf components onto a cheap steel frame. It's the difference between the manufacturing process of an F1 car and a Honda Civic

Soyuz requires WAY too many launches to do a manned lunar mission. We're talking a complexity compared to building Mir, 20 years early.
Proton could do it (although on the lower end), but it was unreliable until 1970.
They needed a 20-50 tons heavy launch ready and reliable by 1967 at least to beat the americans.
