if solar panel cost follows wrights law (like it and any manufactured product really), then additional cost increases just need a lot more scale
Wrights law is an empirical observation that for every doubling of the cumulative manufacturing of a product, the cost to produce that product decreases by a certain percent, which is also called the learning rate
https://medium.com/clean-integration/what-can-wrights-law-teach-us-about-renewable-energy-cbedb35a9bd7

a renewable grid does not mean that you just build solar + batteries to last over the winter months, that is a completely retarded strawman
you build wind, other renewable, nuclear, long term non-battery storage for winters when wind is not enough (hydrogen, heat the ground in the summer so it takes less energy to use heatpumps, more long distance connections between grids)

There's no pressing need for it right now. We're just struggling to make getting to LEO something we can do routinely and cheaply. If the plasma magnet works, it'll still work in 10 years when we're in a position to exploit it. No rush.
The plasma magnet also ties in to Ruth Bamford's demonstration that magnetic shielding of cosmic rays is much easier than expected. Both systems rely upon creating a screen of electrons which deflect the much heavier protons, rather than having the magnetic field do all the work of deflecting the protons.

Welp. So, here's the probable rub with Elon's fuck up with that dude and his disability ousting. That dude in question lives in Iceland. Which has very strong labor laws. On top of that, said dude won Iceland's Person of the Year award in 2022. The entire country LOVES this guy.

It doesn't matter anyone that Elon apologized. Apology is insufficient for breach of law both of US and Icelandic law. Expect a lawsuit. This is going to drag Tesla and SpaceX hard in the coming weeks and months, if not years. Of all the possible ways Elon could have fucked up, this is by and large, the single biggest fuck up he's ever conducted and is one fuck up that he won't be able to escape. Even if the person in question doesn't choose to sue. Department of Labor can draft a lawsuit and send a letter over to Musk. Iceland for example, in retaliation, could sanction Musk or ban Tesla products into their market if they were feeling vindictive as a nation.

This will not blow over. Him buying Twitter was a mistake. He should have built his own platform.

Well its frustrating when it has the potential to revolutionize outer solar system exploration compared to the way we do things now and as you said offer shielding for spacecraft, and the only way to know for sure is to have it actually tested in space which no one looks to be keen on doing including NASA

It's just such a wrong way of doing things, waiting for the conditions to come rather than immediately examining their possibility and potential and using it if possible. If it becomes common knowledge it works and can serve to deflect cosmic / solar radiation that could spur new interest and hope in human spaceflight and have ripple effects down the line as people realize we have the technology to overcome these obstacles and even traverse the solar system at insane speeds under some degree of control.

I hate when groundbreaking tech like this is just sat on and ignored, how many planetary scientists are laboring under the assumption that chemical propulsion and multiple flybys and decade long traverse is the only way to handle scientific exploration of the solar system I wonder, when this shows us we could do so much more (if it works)

The assumption is that there must be first a mission requiring these speeds in order to justify the development and technology demonstration rather than being an intrinsic effort to discover, design and develop propulsion techniques for the sake of enabling new opportunities and possibilities and then the missions follow.

At least MSFS understands that somewhat since their people are working on not just the new RDE but the e-sail tech demonstrator too, which is good because if plasma sails don't work but e-sails do that's still an order of magnitude greater speed in the solar system than we have now

I agree, and I feel the same about the findings about mini-magnetospheres which would revolutionize spacecraft shielding. There is already direct proof that these work (lunar swirls associate with magnetic anomalies indicate deflection of solar particle radiation).
There's a potential for things to suddenly start moving much faster than expected this decade. I think by 2030 the solar system will be much different than it is now.

not really sure what you mean by that, probably not (I assume LCOE is not acceptable)
as you are comparing things that aren't identical, there is going to have to be some metric
the studies that are done, are probably mostly from sources that are biased in some way so you are going to dismiss them, the total cost will probably depend on the specific place you build them and so on

https://www.energy-storage.news/battery-storage-30-cheaper-than-new-gas-peaker-plants-australian-study-finds/

> The authors of CEC’s new paper, ‘Battery storage: the new, clean peaker,’ found that a 250MW, four-hour (1,000MWh) battery system in New South Wales would be a cheaper option for meeting peak demand than a 250MW new-build OCGT from both levelised cost of energy (LCOE) and levelised cost of capacity (LCOC) perspectives.

https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/news-insights/latest-news-headlines/natural-gas-in-transition-grid-balancing-tactics-in-flux-as-battery-costs-fall-64822077

> "Lithium-ion battery storage can already beat gas peaking plants on costs for up to two or three hours of daily power balancing," BloombergNEF associate Tifenn Brandily said in an interview. But battery technology is not there beyond that time frame, Brandily said.

15258649

I hope Radian One succeeds. They're making some interesting tradeoffs: rocket sleds need infrastructure, but airplanes already need hangars, and airports will have tow vehicles to retrieve the sleds. The only real restriction is you probably can't launch from a runway that ends at the water without putting the sled in the drink, so, uh, don't launch from Logan Airport. Winged orbiters without shuttle style FOD-a-palooza launch configurations do have some advantages, as we've seen with the X-37B, so combining that with full reuse should make up for a lot of the dry mass penalty - just don't pretend to compete with Starship on raw $/kg.

Doesn't rely on Mars' magnetosphere at all. You create a magnetic field, and it deflects the solar wind electrons, creating a charge gradient which deflects the heavier protons much more effectively than the magnetic field alone. This effect is observed in natural magnetic anomalies on the moon.
The actual issue might be Mars' atmosphere might block the electrons upon which this relies, but perhaps you could inject them yourself.

Once the Brits cancelled Black Arrow it meant that the US would have to launch every single satellite for them, not just an occasional one that they wouldn't be able to fit on BA.
