degrees don't matter, only results
how many people with mathematics degrees do you know that were influential in the field?
it's barely any out of all the people that have degrees.
It makes sense that people interested in that sort of stuff would pursue an education in it. But you don't need a degree, and having a degree doesn't automically make you a proper mathematician. Only the results do. And meaningless "progress" slapped up for a paper that have no real value don't qualify you to be one either. Your phd is nothing but something you can show to employers to get hired. the pursuit of mathematical truth is always available to the people with and without degrees alike.
