When I did my computer science program, I didn't run into a single person who didn't know how to "code" before day 1. Learning to program is very easy, and can be picked up by motivated students in their free time. Writing "correct" programs and learning efficient algorithms is what you're hoping to learn at college.

Ex teacher here. Australian. But I would guess its much the same in all western countries. Education is no longer results driven. Its all about "equality of outcomes". Its the idea that focusing resources on the dumbest kids will result in everyone graduating at the same level. Which is sort of true except they didn't take into account that dumb kids are dumb for a reason. They can't learn. No matter how much special treatment you throw at them. So as a result everyone gets dragged down to their level.

There's about half a dozen other reasons and they all tie into each other. Lack of discipline. Dysfunctional families. Bureaucracy. Etc etc. Mostly politically driven too. But I would say the "equality of outcomes" bullshit is the biggest factor. Its like throwing a pig into a classroom and then demanding the class will not progress until the pig has mastered linear equations. Of course the pig doesn't pass so then the standard becomes one of making "oink oink!" noises.

The really smart teachers manage to negotiate this minefield with a variety of strategies. It rankled with me to have to adopt such maneuvering instead of just being able to teach. Constantly looking over your shoulder and putting effort into appearing to follow the system which you know to be deeply flawed, and there is nothing you can do about it. But the vast majority of teachers are not smart. Most of them are in fact pretty dim. A lot of them are pretty young things with tied up pony tails and CFBs, waiting out a few years until they can snare a meal ticket. They are utterly incompetent and honestly do not give a fuck. We would inherit the mess they make. Think of starting a new year with a class that still hasn't mastered the skill of making "oink oink!" noises. Its that bad. Personally I got so fed up with my dumb colleagues and the mess of the Education system that I had to leave. Best choice ever.

I was in GT in middle and high school. In high school they bussed me to the inner-city black school. This thoroughly red-pilled me about how racial shit actually works in this country. Before then I was pretty clueless. It simply wasn't a subject ever brought up by my parents. In the GT classes we were comparing Descartes and Sartre or doing trig and calculus. In the regular classes, the football coach would just go over a 10 question multiple choice quiz and give the answers ahead of time so that the students could take the quiz the next day. Well that wasn't what I meant. Google and instruction manuals have already largely made education obsolete. I didn't need instructing on how to assemble a scaffold the first time I hired one because it came with a handy pamphlet and I didn't need instructing on how to do my taxes because I can Google all the documentation. However, most people aren't like this. Most people flounder and struggle without real human instruction, as is evidenced by the fact that you need to do a course to be allowed to use a scaffold on a worksite and by the fact that the overwhelming majority of people either overpay tax and get a rebate or hire someone to do it for them and that is with an intellectually orientated education. Far better to make them good at laying bricks and growing carrots imo.

I would never trust an ai to educate my child. I suppose it could education most people decently enough but that's like trusting wikipedia to be school.
