The planned Hermes reentry demonstrator Maia was estimated in 1987 to cost from 250 to 400 MAU (Basically million of €) and run until 1993, it was not done due to cost.

The Japanese HOPE spaceplane reentry demonstrator program from 1987 to 1998 (excluding the last model scale demonstrator and some preliminary studies) which flew HYFLEX cost 43 billion yen, about 383 million €

Missed opportunity for cooperation for what was fundamentally the same program at the same time.

To differ from what many anons posted, my theory is as follows. Trans is an attention seeking behavior. They seek to be the only member or part of a small group where they can be viewed as the first Trans in ...
The only reason you see them so much is because of their attention seeking. They will fight to be put on a pedestal and not acknowledging them is "violence"
Space flight and related sciences produce many small communities, into which attention seekers can assert themselves. This manifests in a seeming over abundance when you look at the sum of these communities.

One of the reasons why "Trans" so slippery when people try denouncing it is because it's one label that's been stretched over everything from autogynophiles to failed athletes to political fundamentalists who are tried of being their own cult's untouchables. It won't because:
1. There's no safe landing pad at Starbase
2. Every Ship/Booster currently in production follows generally the same design as previous ships. Excluding expendable S26 and S27.

Catching a Ship/Booster is just a matter of timing and precision, and while it may be very difficult, it's certainly not impossible. The first few stacks will definitely be expended over the ocean, to make sure the vehicle can safely perform a "landing" procedure.

It's complete nonsense written by an idiot. SpaceX rockets are extremely reliable with the latest Falcon 9 block having a 100% launch success rate over hundreds of launches. They had some early failures, but that was pretty much by design because they tested much more aggressively than other organizations to which I would credit much of their success. What's the context anyway?

Atlas V has a 100% success rate, but if you treat the Falcon upgrade paths the same way as you do Atlas, the current Falcon 9 has a 100% success rate too.
>More reliable than Soyuz or any other rocket that sent human to space
True, strictly in the sense that it's the only rocket that's sent humans into space and the current iteration hasn't failed in flight. Once Starliner starts flying (lol), Atlas V will have a tied record.

Indians will have a launch vehicle, just maybe a small station.
Europe and Japan might have a launch vehicle or something, but low chance.
Russia will be fucked after wrecking it's economy.
The US will have one or two private space stations.
A few Artemis missions now and then if the program doesn't get canned. Gateway will be there but probably almost nothing on the lunar ground.
SpaceX will be maturing the Starship, lots of launches for Starlink and customer stats, some tourism launches now and then, including the Moon orbit ocasionally.
Other launchers will be doing their thing but somewhat better than now. Blue Origin will be doing LEO tourism and RL will be launching stuff from Starlink competitor constellations.
Outer Solar System probes launched during this decade will be arriving by this time, while the first Starship launched probes will be launched and arrive in the same decade.

Wasn’t able to get ISRU working for Methalox, so the Mars Ascent Vehicle will now carry all of its propellant down to the surface. I beefed it up to act as an ascent/descent vehicle for the crew, and it can support 6 Kerbals for 34 days before ascending to low Mars orbit

The fatter MEV means that the launcher had to be beefed up, too. I am currently investigating the trade between using the Pyrios/Dual F-1 boosters, versus “normal” SLS 5 segment boosters.

The launcher is a traditional shuttle derived vehicle. I had to stretch the core and upper stages a lot. The first stage is powered by dual RS-68 engines instead of the quartet of RS-25s in the SLS. They have way worse performance but are way cheaper, and for role play purposes, can support a higher flight rate (1 launch per month)

It's not a plausible problem now. After 5-10 years when Russians reconstitute their forces it can be back on the menu. With the added benefit that driving a wedge between ethnic Russians and Kazaks is way more natural than what happens over Ukraine.

The don’t really have any need that makes allocating the needed budget something they want to do. Pakistan’s launched a grand total of nine satellites, only three of which have launched in the last decade, and all of the recent ones have flown on contracted Chinese launches. Not everyone needs their own domestic launch vehicle.

That being said, these was this proposed/rumored vehicle called the “Taimoor” that’s based on Pakistani ballistic missile tech with a few extra exported Chinese stages on top. There may or may not have been a few failed test launches of this thing a few years back.

The Liquid propellant engine technology learned from the German rocket engine was transferred to the sustainer stage of the Funryu 4 surface-to-air missile.2'3 Earlier versions of the Funryu missile used solid-propellant rocket motors. Funryu 4, supposedly was 13.1 ft long, 2 ft in diameter, and had a loaded weight of
4190 lb. It was designed to go to 20 mile altitude and a maximum speed of
650 mph. Called Tokuro-2, its LPRE was built by MHI, used the same propel-
lants and essentially the same design concept as the engine for the Shusui air-
craft. The test flight was scheduled for 16 August 1945, but the war ended one
day earlier, and this LPRE has never flown

Many people in the industry are similarly obsessed with space as people on here. If anything, that can be a negative, as it's easier for employers to keep wages deflated knowing that a good portion of their engineers are working out of passion rather than a desire for wealth.

E-sails have the advantage that the thrust vector can be varied in a way that current p-m sails cannot
>by inclining the sail the thrust direction can be modified by up to ∼ 30o. This makes it possible to spiral inward or outward in the solar system by tilting the sail in the appropriate direction to decrease or increase the heliocentric orbital speed, respectively. Thus, even though the radial component of the E-sail thrust vector is always positive, one can still use the system also to tack towards the sun.

Just FYI, SpaceX was the first one to step in with a plan within the first day of the Soyuz problem. They submitted the plan to NASA, who then relayed it to the Russians. >>15208475
>I think Roscosmos would be fucked
What Moscow likes to do after a major public embarrassment is make examples out of most of the old management class which puts enough fear of the Tzar into their replacements to get them do a conscientious job for a while. Moscow would also nationalize everything they could, but I not sure how much more nationalized the Russian space sector can currently get. The quality of work would improve over the intermediate term, so it wouldn't actually be the worst thing that's ever happened to them.

All things considered though, they aren't in any imminent danger. If the first replacement fails, Russia would probably try another Soyuz since the optics of needing America to save the day would be intolerable to them right now. I don't know how soon they'd be able to realistically build one though, and honestly given recent events I would rather be curled up in the corner of Dragon than strapped in on a rushed Soyuz capsule.

There’s a language barrier on top of being in totally seperate internet ecosystems, and it’s in a very specialised topic. How many Americans right now are away that america lost its manned spaceflight capabilities and flew on Russian Soyuz only?

Rocket labs due to their decision to move into medium lift with Neutron and buying up half the spacecraft component suppliers.

Relativity due to the potential value of their manufacturing methods and their decision to move into medium lift reusable with Terran-R.

It seems unlikely that any pure small-launch provider will survive in a world with Starship rideshare missions. Starship's payload capacity combined with the metric fuckton of space tugs currently being developed are going to render the custom orbit access provided by dedicated smallsat launches effectively moot.

Why was Russia so anal about making Zenits in Ukraine (before the invasion)? ESA and America are totally fine with international cooperation. And this was before even 2014’s annexation of Crimea.

Zenit is cool because it’s big enough to carry Soyuz and Progress into orbit. A triple core Zenit gives more lift capacity than Delta IV Heavy, and a 5-core Zenit (basically Angara A5 on steroids) let’s you put 50+ tons into LEO

Good I don’t blame him. It’s a very rushed project with low quality bids and even lower quality standards. To be honest I think NASA will go with Axiom for a while, LEOdest will be scrapped, and some sort of more comprehensive program will be started from scratch. It'll be tricky to navigate it with Artemis going on at the same time, but killing ISS will free up a ton of resources—and if NASA has the balls to kill off SLS it will really help them a ton. idk if spacex will do it but i think they should do something like it. it's a long way to mars and the company will need to test out the life support systems over a long period of time, so they might as well as leave starships in orbit long-term as test beds for the life support systems. if these can double as space stations then even better.

Is it wrong that I feel like Starship landings will eventually become even safer than Falcon 9’s?
Falcon 9 landings require at least two relights, with 3 engines being needed for the re entry burn. Any failure of those three kills the booster.
Starship only needs 2 engines out of 3 for the flip and landing. They can lose an engine and still land, while Falcon 9 can’t.
People say the flaps are scary because if one fails, you lose the ship, but it’s not like Falcon 9 can land if one of its gridfins fails, either.
The tiles definitely are worrying though but SpaceX is smart.
It seems like a lot of the issue with Starship landings is the reliability of Raptor. It’s definitely something that needs work, but it’s not impossible to assume that after 100 or or even 50 or 20 or so launches of Starship, Raptor is safe enough that landings are no longer “experimental”

for ISRU you need something like 8 football fields worth of panels
you cannot have that much area with panels that fold out from a starship

I have this idea in my head
1) Remotely operated forklift/telehandler unloads the heaps of solar panels, prepacked on pallets.
2) The same telehandler (or another robotic rover) then unfolds them, plugs them together and into the ISRU unit by extension cords
then you just need to top off the ISRU fuel factory with ice or permafrost regolith by a bucket loader.
All of this can be automated/done remotely so you can have fully fueled Starship ready and waiting before you send the first astronauts.

I think Starship will need a service module for the trans-orbital flight
I mean look how many solar panels/radiators (granted, they are old and garbage) ISS needs for just a handful of people

>I worked briefly on the X-33 proposal at McDonnell Douglas (heat shield). The program management had a tough time getting upper management to spend bid and proposal money on a vertical takeoff vertical landing (VTOVL) SSTO concept. NASA appeared to have an institutional bias toward vertical takeoff horizontal landing (VTOHL) concepts (things with wings, like the Space Shuttle). But we were able to write the Phase II proposal for our X-33 concept.

>We thought that we had a good chance to win since DC-X/XA had demonstrated that VTOVL worked with current rocket propulsion (four RL-10 hydrolox engines). However, when Lockheed won it was something of a surprise. In the post award debriefing we learned that the NASA proposal evaluators had down-scored our entry as not sufficiently innovative.

>In fact we had been fighting an uphill battle throughout Phase I. With few exceptions, NASA engineers rejected the VTOVL mode for X-33, and like NASA upper management, believed that DC-X/XA was an SDIO publicity stunt with little technical merit. NASA did not accept our argument that a VTOVL was a superior testbed. And it became evident that the success of the DC-X/XA flights had become a net detriment to us. Those flights had successfully demonstrated the low-speed handling and landing characteristics of a VTOVL vehicle. Therefore, the NASA evaluators saw little reason to choose a VTOVL design for X-33 since nothing new would be learned by landing a larger vehicle vertically.

Maybe. It takes roughly 180 days (6 months avg) to get to Mars. 180 days x 0.8 kg (per day of food) x 100 people = 14,400 kg of food. If each individual weighs ~180lb avg, thats ~8200kg in mass.

So food/people is easy to carry. Its only 22,600kg. ~23% of mass of 100Ton Starship. The question is can 77 ton be enough for life support/power, living space? I think it is. Extra personnel luggage can be chugged inside a cargo only Starship (if we optimize them).

As for environmental/power modules, ISS for example needs ~100 kw of power to run the entire thing. ISS has internal volume similar to Boeing 747 as well. So its possible that much of power maybe needed to keep environmental control/powers running on Starship.

Obviously a mini 100kw nuclear power would be awesome for that, but I think a large solar power could do it too.

If there are loads of starships on Mars sitting around waiting for a transfer window, that's a lot of spare lift capacity.
I think manufacturing spacecraft might be a prime economic activity on mars, that is the main advantage of it's crappy gravity after all.
A whole lot less deltaV to get to the asteroid belt from Mars' surface for example, and you don't have to worry about greenhouse gas emissions there either.

Obviously will require a lot of development to make sense, but you would need a lot of that stuff anways if you want a sustainable presence on Mars.

Why exactly did SaturnV have such low TWR on the first stage? was the peak TWR on the first stage too high? Did F-1 have really a shallow throttle? afaik they shut the center engine off completely 15 seconds before first stage burnout, presumably to manage TWR.
