Impossible? Probably not, given that one of the larger project Orion space craft could reach 3% of light speed and that doesn't need any new technology. The real question is if its practical to do so, it may not be worth the effort once all things are taken into consideration.

If we can achieve travel at a considerable percentage of the speed of light interstellar travel would be possible. Generation ships wouldn't be necessary. As you travel closer to the speed of light you experience more time dilation and you seem to arrive at your destination sooner. A photon relative to it's own frame of reference technically arrives instantly to it's destination.
