Gaia hypothesis states that both life and non-living chemistry eg the carbon cycle, are interactive and interdependent and include many feedbacks which over geologic time scales sustain habitable conditions on earth resulting in a stable and self-correcting equilibrium.

On the other hand, Medea hypothesis proposes that life, understood as a superorganism, may be more often than not self-destructive or suicidal, prone to exhaust all available resources, poisoning itself and going extinct. Microbial-triggered mass extinctions result in returns to the microbial-dominated state it has been for most of its history of Earth.

Which one is correct?

None. Snek theory applies however.
