If proton decay is TRUE (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_decay))

then there is no afterlife / heaven / hell

game over

My mom told me that proton decay triggers the big crunch and new big bang. I'm not sure if she was joking or not. Sometimes the things she says makes me think she isn't from. Well nevermind.

How so? I am not a believer but most religions tend to have some sort of metaphysics, presumably metaphysics which do not obey the laws of this universe.

The problem with that is that it misunderstands what nonexistence is. Time isn't "infinite" when your dead, its simply not there. Time is a sense that we evolved to be able to draw cause and effect between events, and as psychedelics have proven its completely reliant on the brain. You remove the brain you remove time, simple as.

That's what Roger Penrose thinks. When nothing exists anymore but photons, there are no entities left for whom time and space have any meaning. Then there's nothing left to do but have a new big bang.
Cyclic Conformal Cosmology I think he calls it.

The thing I came into the thread to say.
Proton decay is the best-case scenario, because as soon as the last particle decays the last reference frame also disappears and every photon is suddenly "back" in the same place.
I think he also mentioned something about entities at the heat death of the universe possibly being able to encode themselves into the starting conditions for the next universe, which is cool but also terrifying because if that's possible there are definitely quasi-gods kicking around somewhere in our universe.

Conformal cyclic cosmology is actually more compatible with dualism than pure materialism, it's just that everything to do with the mind starts to sound very schizo if you make a serious attempt to explain the mechanics of it.
