I think the only way you can travel into the future is by slowing time down for yourself, by either travelling really fast or being somewhere with really high gravity, and then waiting a while and then returning to normal speed or gravity, so time elsewhere would have progressed further than it has for you. But I think you're right in saying that you can't instantly travel forwards in time because to do that you would need a machine that can either travel at the speed of light or withstand infinite gravity

How about short distance time travel into the future?

For example I know my porn download will be finished in 1 hour. I could spend this hour sleeping or I could travel forward in time. Nothing significant will happen in this 1 hour so it's safe to say this part of the time line is linear and deterministic.
