Studying useless shit is caused by low testosterone. That’s why only 60% of math majors are men and 80+% of engineers are men. If you are high testosterone you don’t give a fuck about learning things that don’t matter like number theory (lmao) and sociology. If you want to pass on your genes as a man you need to actually be useful.

Topology is anything but useless. I don't get why engineers are obsessed with claiming that math and natural sciences are useless while studying things pioneered by mathematicians and scientists and doing a dead-end job creating nothing permanent; all the technology you flush out will eventually be replaced by superior technology, but discoveries in math and science have permanence.

The short answer is that OP is extremely dumb.
The long answer is that topology (in particular, real continuous functions and their topological properties) is the among the first—and the first in my experience—ways to decisively embarrass the OpenAI chatbot.
Specifically with the "compare continuous functions to functions such that the inverse image of every open set is open" trick. This selects mathematicians from humans, and the AI just spews nonsense gibberish that no human nor mathematician would ever come up with, proving that AI is a source of mindless gibberish in the math classroom.
It could have been something else, but it was topology, at least for me.
That's useful.

How do you quickly filter AI chatbots?
Start talking about topology, continuous functions, and open sets.
Now you say
>oh, it's useless because we would have found something that serves that purpose anyway
Now anything that could possibly be useful is useless because in theory you could find something else that could be used as a substitute.

Moreover, if you say
>Quickly filtering AI chatbots isn't useful, at least not outside research
Then you both confine yourself to a non-research role and suggest that ways to deal with the substantial effluent of so-called "artificial intelligence research" is less important than it really is, and it isn't all that important, but it's important enough to enough people to warrant serious consideration.
You have to take an MTV approach to education philosophy to get here.
You aren't considering the hazards presented by worlds we don't experience, such as the possibility that it took a lot longer to develop ways to quickly and decisively embarrass a chatbot that claimed to possess some sort of intellect.
Regardless, topology won this informal game or fox hunt.
This isn't news; it's simply a matter of my own experiences, but just like "coq proof of false" it is an important milestone that delineates the boundaries of math, computers, and education philosophy

Part of what makes topology useful is that it seems useless since its primary use is a first stepping stone for testing out a given axiomatic system, i.e. it's like an operating system for an axiomatic system.

It's useful for testing out axiomatic systems.
>Oh, but axiomatic systems aren't useful, so it's only useful for testing things that aren't useful.
Regardless, we've established that topological spaces aren't important to you because you don't have enough axiomatic systems.
if you had enough axiomatic systems, then you would see topological spaces and their properties as natural tests for properties of axiomatic systems
so we can conclude that OP is deficient in axiomatic systems, as he has no use for topological spaces

I'd say prime numbers are far more useless. Yes they are used in encryption, but there are other methods of encryption that don't use primes and are arguably better like lattice based methods and other post quantum methods. But primes aren't used in encryption because primes are great, they're used because mathematicians are too retarded to work out a way to factor them efficiently. People are actually paid money to research prime numbers all day, it's laughable. Sure maybe have one or two guys looking into them but instead there's dozens or even hundreds of them and they treat primes as some kind of miracle of mathematics and they must all be found like they're Pokemon or some shit. I liken it to say a video game speedrunner looking for all the glitches in a game. People that follow the speedrunning scene of that game think the top runner is some kind of genius pushing extreme boundaries and blowing minds by discovering things never thought possible. In reality outside their tiny group nobody gives a fuck and think they're idiots for wasting their time because nothing that comes out of the group is useful or meaningful in any way other than to their own little group. But for mathematics the amazing genius aspect has leaked out into the public and there's a notion that these people searching for something useless are of the highest order of intelligence. I'd say something like inventing a novel product on your own and turning it into a billion dollar businesses without cheating or scamming anyone takes far more intelligence and it would be actually useful too

So we're now at the point where topology is TDD for math, especially formal math theories, especially novel formal math theories circa 1875-1925.
So topology is the key innovation that enables serious discussion of axiomatic systems as they offer no place where technical problems can arise, they are the petri dishes and Bunsen burners, and we can understand why topology was useful at the time for organizing the search for properties of novel formal systems...
topological spaces aren't just useful, they're a key milestone in math history, great moments in formal math history...
aww...
