Isn't "understanding" just memorizing algorithms?

Understanding is forming a network of connections that reflect the relationships between all the different aspects of all the different concepts you understand so that nontrivial statements about such relationships become intuitively apparent.

just for context, thurstons work was mainly about 3 dimensional manifolds and how they can be shaped. it relies a lot more on visual thinking and intuition than, say, classical group theory

some people have gone so far as to classify mathematicians into categories based on whether they are more visual or more symbolically minded. idk for sure what he meant, but you could take this as thurston pledging allegiance to Aryan mathematics

Yeah, good post. It's not so easy. Many mathematicians devote their lives to narrow topics that are heavily computational in nature, and its still math.
For his quote he selected a few things that are elements of the set of mathematics, but not all of it. So yes, you could have all of them or none of them and its still math....
My English isn't good enough for this.

>What did this Fields medalist mean by this?
Understanding.
It is formed by 3 parts:
under-stand-ing,
where.
under = low
stand = being
ing = present time.

if we eliminate the -ing, we have:
under-stand.
Now, everything that is under can be over, so under and over are related, then it's not necesary in the word understanding.
Hence, we have now:
Stand.
But what is stand? i dont know. However, it is the core of the word understand, so without it the word would not have a meaning. If we search the etimology, we got this:

Old English standan (verb), stand (noun), of Germanic origin, from an Indo-European root shared by Latin "stare" and Greek "histanai".
With this, stand is stare in latin. So,
What is stare?
I dont know, but now i know one thing, and is that i need a girlfriend.

comes from the german unterstehen (“to be subordinate”). Synchronically analyzable as unter- + stehen. to stand under, to be subordinate to. (Like saluting an authority figure) I stand under the King's English. I understand the King's English

If you want a girlfriend though, unless you just want a friend that happens to be a girl, I'd use the modern english and care not for grammar and syntax but purely phoneticism
