Back in the 1950s and 1960s there were two opposing factors in climate science. The first was increased aerosols in the atmosphere, primarily caused by burning coal. These aerosols reflect sunlight, a process called 'global dimming'. The second is CO2 which, while it is released whether you burn coal or oil will raise temperature through 'greenhouse gases'. In the 1950s and 1960s we were uncertain which of these two processes would overpower the other. Would aerosols reflect enough sunlight to overcome the increase in CO2? Some papers in the 60s and 70s argued that global dimming would overcome global warming and we would enter an ice age.

As data came in two things happened:
1. there was a global effort to reduce aerosols in the atmosphere first because of the EPA and second because of a lawsuit against Great Britain brought on by Scandanavian countries in international court. The Scandinavians argued successfully that Great Britain industry especially burning coal was destroying forests in Scandinavia. These two events reduced the amount of coal burning around the world which reduced the amount of aerosols that cause global dimming.
2. Throughout the 70s and 80s better satellites were put in orbit which more accurately measured global temperature than ground based stations. These satellites throughout the 80s and until today showed that CO2, not aerosols, were the stronger force driving climate. The science became incontrovertible and global warming has been accepted by science institutions around the world.
