I am spending my thanksgiving alone this year

>>15010684Ok, I'll bite. How has SpaceX NOT revolutionized the space launch industry. Before SpaceX, America controlled 0% of the commercial launch market. After SpaceX came around, America utterly dominates the commercial launch market. Before SpaceX, America lost its own independent access to space. After SpaceX, America now has independent access to space again. Before SpaceX, expensive and low-cadence expendable rockets were the norm. After SpaceX, like 90% of new rockets are reusable and far cheaper for it.>Muh teslaqI don't give a fuck about tesla, this is space flight general, not automobile general.
>>15010785Starship as a fully reusable launcher may work, after a decade of serious development (so late 2020s) and maybe some mild downscalling.Starship as a rapidly reusable launcher will likely take much more time, Starship as a multipurpose spacraft is a pipe dream.
>>15010798why do you think F9 is the most reliable rocket ever

>>15010791>a thing they never even tried to do, didn't work
Does anyone remember when this board made fun of SLS 1-4 years ago, saying starship will land on mars before SLS will take its first flight?Wonder what happened to those people kek
>>15010669A RUD would've provided just as much kino and useful science while also freeing up billions of dollars in future budget as NASA contemplates their embarrassing existence.I'm thankful that Artemis might still fail prior to the landing because 2 is a joke of a mission.

>>15010835The launchpad itself suffered a RUD lol
>>15010810I don't see why SpaceX will have serious issues with full reuse like you suggest, especially considering that even if the current heat shield design doesn't work they could just replace it with a heavier one and have a 110 tonne LEO capacity instead of 130 tonnes to LEO. Nothing that would take a decade, especially for SpaceX. You're right that Starship being rapidly reusable will likely take a while, but even with the keralox engines of F9 they've been able to get the F9 refurb time down to two weeks. I agree that getting Starship to the point where it can launch once a day is probably not happening, at least not in this decade, but once a week is definitely achievable based off F9, and since starships will be mass produced, SpaceX will still be able to put a ton of shit into orbit with the Starship system.>Starship as a multipurpose spacraft is a pipe dream. Why? Starship HLS is already being developed, and baseline starship is already somewhat optimized to be used on Mars. Also, once you get to orbit, you're pretty much halfway to anywhere in the solar system in terms ∆V, and with refilling that allows Starship to go to most of the inner solar system up to the asteroid belt quite quickly.
Today I will remind them>We face genuine risk of bankruptcy if we cannot achieve a Starship flight rate of at least once every two weeks next year. - Elon Musk, November 2021

>>15011185Russia has national vitality left but it needs to be separated from the international system for longer to really get it back. They were being parasitized by Western and Israeli corporate interests for too long after the privatization.
>>15011181There's actually a much better chance of Russia teaming up with India. The two have maintained fairly cordial relationships despite all of the recent goings-on, and India could be a viable market for Russia engine exports. Given the unreasonable delays that the SCE-200 program is facing we might see a play to replace them with RD-181s on India's next generation heavy launch vehicle. Russia is also pretty involved in training the Astronauts for India's almost-about-to-happen manned space program, but they actually need somewhere to go once they get to orbit if they want to do something more than just recreate the Gemini program. Getting involved in a future Russian space station would solve that problem. Russia did have a good case for teaming up more closely with the ESA prior to February, but right now Europe is too drawn into the western sphere for that to be allowed to go anywhere.
>>15011181>EU + RussiaIt would be impossible to get anything done. The EU by itself is already a bureaucratic hellhole.Even NASA only got the SLS done because the US government wanted to mantain all the jobs that building and maintaining the Space Shuttles created.I think only private corps will get the job done, honestly.

>>15011201>but they actually need somewhere to go once they get to orbit if they want to do something more than just recreate the Gemini programThey can take their time about it. China's first manned spaceflight was in 2003; their first space station (Salyut-equivalent) was 2011. They've only done nine crewed flights. Next year, India wants to put someone in space; they could follow China by doing a few more flights during the 2020s, then ramping up efforts in the 2030s.Partnerships with private/next-generation space stations prior to this would be useful, if only for prestige/interoperability reasons, but not necessary.

Nothing will beat the Trump and his space policy cabinet. Mike Pence, Jim Bridenstine Scott Pace, Greg Autry, Wilbur Ross. One of my favorite news pieces filmed at SpaceX. These guys don't even get inside and somehow do a better job of capturing the general attitude of what it's like to work there than CBS news. The one employee that they manage to stop and interview is hilarious.https://youtu.be/fY3n53YcuKg

How can I leverage my years of work and experience on /sfg/ in my interview at SpaceX?
>>15011616>What time do you personally think that will be happening around? My honest professional opinion is that I don't know. There are a lot of things that have to work in concert for this to happen, especially with starship being so large and so complex. A million things have to work correctly and only one of them has to fail in the wrong spot at the wrong time to cause a cascading failure. This is as true of systems of people as it is of rockets. Elon doing twitter stuff is worrisome to me, not because of what he posts, but because I pray he is capable of splitting his attention enough to keep SpaceX chugging. >Also, is SpaceX is serious about the Mars stuff?Taking all of the above into account, I still am resolute in my conviction that Mars will happen. It must happen. There are so many people here who would lay their lives on the line for the mission. Many do, by sacrificing their personal lives, sleep schedule, alcohol tolerance, sanity, and most of all, time. I have never worked at a place so brimming with motivated people, with so much accomplished by so few. The only way Mars doesn't happen is by some massive, external force, but that may only extinguish the company, not the people. The people who work here work as one, and I have no doubt that even if SpaceX as a company were destroyed, some other organization would carry the torch, fueled by the same insane people.

Reading a bit about the Early Ariane program, it seems they were very lucky the CNES and former directors of the Europa program had managed to bounce back quickly after the failure of the later, the Ariane program was agreed at the European level in 1973, a few months later you had the oil crash, and once elected Giscard d’Estaing seriously wanted to cut down the french funding of the program (2/3 of the total funding) but was eventually convinced by the quick progress of the program thanks to earlier developments, it seems like if the directors and engineers of the program hadn’t been so reactive the whole thing would have been cancelled with the oil crash, and Europe would have been stuck without indigenous launchers until well into the 80s at least.

>>15012566>something big.No, we have to go smaller >The basic STAR was intended to be as small and cheap as possible. It would take only one man to space, and do it in Spartan style. The crew compartment would be unpressurized and was only big enough to sit in: the astronaut would have to stay seated in a spacesuit for the duration of his mission. The craft would have no hydraulics, or an ejection seat, or even landing gear. Instead it would finish its ride home under a parawing, like the one originally planned for Gemini. As it would usually end up on land in the US and was relatively simple in design, refurbishing costs and turnaround time would be kept at a minimum. As the lack of an ejection seat suggests, Redding was also a bit contemptuous of the safety culture that had evolved in NASA since the mid-60s, and spec’d his proposal to the test-as-you-fly/fly-as-you-test standards of years earlier.https://falsesteps.wordpress.com/2012/10/31/star-the-usafs-everything-spacecraft/

>>15012919I'm still saying that Starship should've launched first. What the fuck happened with this timeline
>>15012931Boeing got their nuts back. And SpaceX lost theirs
>>15012931Booster was more complicated than originally thought. Same with OLM. SLS was already fully tested by 2021, they just didn’t stack it for a year.>>15012932What should SpaceX have done, in your opinion?
>>15012918It's not just the ISS, there will be commercial stations.
>>15012934SpaceX should buy Boeing stock to remain solvent
Apologize right now.
>>15012940Sherman didn’t go far enough
>>15012940im so fucking sorry
>>15012930Do you have ressources and link for early post-atlas plans? I only became interested in it just before Vulcan was started. But yeah, American spaceflight would be uber fucked post-2014, IRL early 2010s US Space doomerism would be absolutely nothing compared to late 2010s/current space doomerism in this alternate history.
>>15012932>>15012934I really hope once Starship goes orbital this whole program can pick up its original pace and come back at that test-and-break mindset that once had. If the rest of the decade ends up being like this past couple of years and Mars is still 15-20 years away as always I might as well kill myself.
>>15012930I'm saying that the Atlas V is sold out, and Boeing only has seven Atlas's left. Boeing might have been able to beg a rocket or two from Amazon, but with how the way the other rockets for Kuiper are getting extra delayed that doesn't seem likely.
>>15012951It will, it’s just that a failure now will set the program back a year. A fully fueled starship stack exploding on the OLM would hurt more than a few week delay to test shit.
Thinking more about it, people get space exploration history all backwards. It's not that everything after Apollo was a downfall of space flight, it's just that Apollo was an historical anomaly and what came after was the actual normal progression of exploration. The US went from putting capsules in space right into landing on the Moon in just a decade, with a technology that barely worked and an unprofitable system. The moon landing only happened because of the special circumstances of the cold war. The factors aligned in such a way that there was the political will needed for it to happen. In a normal timeline we would have just sent satellites for some time, then manned capsules to space and simple probes, then orbital space stations and increasingly more ambitious probes, then finally manned missions to the Moon, then Mars. If you exclude Apollo, this is more or less what we are doing.
>>15012775>all just because of 500 votes in fucking floridaComposite tank was a bad ideas for it tho.
>>15012779If starship is even 1/10th as successful in terms of flight rate and cost as Elon promises you'll get much, much, much more then that in your lifetime, unless you're in your 60s or 70s or you die in a freak accident or war.
>>15012970I disagree that there is a "normal progression of exploration".Milestone make the public more likely to accept space funding and make more students and grduates decide to go in the space industry, which feedbacks on itself, without milestones the space industry could very well just stagnates to the bare minimum of earth observation and military communications.
>>15012785>My prediction for a moon base is late 2030's to 2040'sBy a moon base, do you mean a mcmurdo station scale large base, or a small outpost? If you mean the latter, that will essentially happen with the first crewed HLS landing. If you mean the former you're probably right.
>>15012951Future Starship orbital tests won't take so long to prepare, remember how SN8 took forever to be ready to launch and SN9-SN15 launched much quicker? It'll be like that. 2023 will be the year of starship orbital tests like satellite deployment, reentry/landing, refilling, and reuse. By 2024 the Kennedy Starship launch pad and factory will be ready and one of the ocean platforms might be ready as well, so the launch rate will dramatically pick up.
>>15012978Only if the world economy doesn't colapses during my lifetime, and the way my generation is retarded, I don't have high hopes.>>15012980I guess simple manned flights would happen early now and then, but it would still take a long time for that to develop. The mainstream does not like space exploration, don't fool yourself like that.>>15012984I mean anything in between those extremes. I know what Artemis promises, but I will only believe when it happens because it has been all a disappointment so far.
Astonishing how terrible the coverage is for the largest mission NASA has done in decades. What are they doing? Have we gotten ANYTHING other than a few hi-res shots?Kaguya was better than this and that happened fourteen years ago.

>>15013226Not exactly what you're talking about, but I was reminded of this>The Martian Apostasy (also known as The Martian Rebellion, The Martian War for Independence, or The Martian Revolutionary War) was an event in the mid twenty-second century in which the colonizers and pioneers of Mars declared the planet and its population to be free from the control of the unified planetary government of Earth, the Jurisdiction of Earth's Workers.>The majority of the conflict took place on Mars between Earth loyalists and Martian independents. However, with Earth loyalists vastly outnumbered, they were typically forced out of airlocks with little resistance.>Despite the bulk of what could be considered Earth's forces being defeated within just two months, the Jurisdiction of Earth's Workers refused to recognize Martian independence. After much debate among the top Martian council, their leader, the Elon, decided to launch a counterattack against the Jurisdiction of Earth's Worker's to force them to sue for peace.>After light interplanetary orbital bombardment, typically consisting of boulders (often jokingly called rogs or roggs by Martians), and several ships loaded with ball bearings to decimate space infrastructure within the orbit of Earth, the Jurisdiction of Earth's Workers was forced to recognize Mars as a fully independent society, people, and planet.>Earth's moon was also seized by the Martians to act as a forward operating base against any potential further hostilities by the Jurisdiction of Earth's Workers.>Ultimately, The Martian Apostasy would come to be known by many as the rebirth of humanity and is often cited as the most significant cultural event in history.

Why is NSF forums so autistic about DIRECT? Dead idea from more than a decade ago and they are still clinging to it. Literally the ugliest SDLV that was ever conceived. There would have been public outcry seeing this POS on the launchpad after retiring the space shuttle.
>>15013370>Musk voted against Big Jim
>>15013384DIRECT seemed like the perfect solution for the constellation program. A lot of people had hope for it. SLS shows that it was never “perfect.”Do note that SLS =\= DIRECT. Direct planned on reusing the same production lines and tooling as the shuttle ET. SLS totally swapped that out. That’s not even mentioning how DIRECT planned on using traditional 4 segment boosters instead of SLS’ 5. Biggest is that DIRECT did not require a massive redesign of the shuttle ET to hold top-down loads. The normal shuttle ET had a 20% ish margin to it which was deemed suitable for DIRECT as-is. For SLS, nasa wanted a 40+% margin, so they redesigned the ET to the point it’s a new stage.

>>15013391>>15013396Yes technically it was supposed to be cheaper but would have required an entirely new upper stage with new engines versus SLS which uses off the shelf Delta IV upper stage. Also not using the 5 segment booster that was almost completed by that time would have been a missed opportunity. Without the upper stage it's no better than the Delta IV heavy for launching Orion into LEO. And Orion wasn't even close to being done anyway so it made sense to just take the extra time to build a proper core stage rather than cling onto the old shuttle tank.

>>15013981The fathers of Ariane (at least post-Europa Ariane), guys like D’Astelles, Vignelles, Sillard we’re actually quite bullish on reuse, the shuttle and spacecrafts, many felt the Hermes program as a mistake and something that was imposed to them. After all D’astelle and Vignelles has already laid out the entire Ariane 1-5 plan as early as 1979, with Ariane 5 initially meant as an upscale Ariane 4 with a cryogenic instead of hyperbolic middle stage, but that was changed to the design we know because of Hermes (along with some additional guidance problems and difficulty of adding a 9th Viking engine)

https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter-make-his-own-phone-apple-app-store-2022-11>Elon Musk says he will create 'alternative' smartphone if Twitter is kicked out of the Apple App Store>Musk wrote in a Friday tweet he would "make an alternative phone" to compete with Apple's iPhone if the tech giant ends up blocking Twitter from its powerful App Store. Musk's stance on content moderation is essentially to allow speech that does not violate law. In addition, he is reportedly planning to try and make money for Twitter off of adult content or pornography, similar to the site Ony Fans.>Musk did not deny on Friday the possibility that his changes to Twitter could get it kicked out of the App Store, but allowed, "I certainly hope it does not come to that." It's over, the muskrat in chief has ADHD and won't stop, can't focus on one thing and will have even less time for SpaceX. What's next, building his own hosting platform, own payment processor, his own internet, own government, etc etc etc
>>15014192Sadly, arianespace has always been obsessed with modularity from the 70s to today, with A5 being the one exception to the rule, and even the many regretted it even at A5’s peak of market share, you can go back to ~2009 preliminary reports on A6, it was all about modularity, a monolithic reusable first stage is against their core design principle.
>>15014192>Ariane Xthey're only on 6 right now, give them some time

Reminder, SpaceX will create their own military on Mars. Self sufficiency/independence/defense is the goal of Mars colony

>>15014240The company was the effective governemnt in British-controlled India for over a century. It wasn't an especially effective governemnt and had constant financial troubles, which led to it being gutted and nationalized by parliament and its remainders absorbed into the British Raj.
