How would you react to the news breaking of the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life in one or more parts of our galaxy? How would the general public react?

I know that this won't happen.

I am actually aware of extraterrestrial civilizations in this Universe.

They can not physically interact with Earth or it's inhabitants, as long as I am alive.

after the shock of first contact faded, there would probably be some backlash towards the aliens, depending on how different their society is. For example, what if they killed the least intelligent members of their population, or what if they had a hyper authoritarian society, with only the small percentage in power having any personal autonomy.

The communication delay would also be long as hell, assuming we would even have the ability to communicate back over dozens or even hundreds of light years. By the time our messages reached them, and their replies reached us, most of the people who were alive during the first messages would be dead.

If they were too far away to be any immediate threat id celebrate, if they show up in orbit or something that's pants-shitting type stuff

regardless of the circumstances a lot of people would probably lose their fucking minds and it would be a nightmare

id be surprised. I believe intelligent life is so rare the chances of two examples ever being aware of each other is a quintillion to one.

>> No.15007631

the chances are exceedingly low, simply due to the vast distances between our sun and any other star even remotely close to harboring life.

however, despite that, I'm absolutely sure there is life elsewhere in the universe. There are 100-400 billion stars in the Milky Way alone, and over 2 trillion galaxies, all with more or less stars. Multiply that by billions of years of development time and it makes no sense life would only appear on Earth.

Now, given that, if one of those achieved faster than light travel in some way, then perhaps. still, doesn't seem likely.

>How would you react to the news breaking of the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life in one or more parts of our galaxy?
Probably a few days of excitement followed by just kind of accepting it and moving on, assuming it is a "We catched those obviously artificial radio waves from alpha beta omega centauri" kind of deal.
>How would the general public react?
Probably the same way, only that the honeymoon period would last longer, for maybe a month or two, and with a small, but dedicate and longer lived group of schizos paying attention to it longer.

The first thing that would happen is that it would cause a religious conflict all over the world, assuming they have their own religion.

I would be excited and a little worried. I somewhat selfishly hope we're the first civilization in our galaxy, at least. That way we can ensure our safety by identifying if a fledgeling alien civilization is safe enough to mentor and turn into an ally, or dangerous enough to eliminate.

Now in the case of a more advanced alien empire, we need to establish that we are not interested or not capable of harming them, reaching out for trade and the collection of information.

I think it's crazy that Alien contact is solely dependent on who they decide to contact, like what if aliens contact North Korea or Eritrea or some african terrorist group

That is one possibility.
