God I remember being a retard little kid and thinking that astronauts would be able to live in Orion all the way to Mars
They threw SLS away like garbage because SLS is garbage

>>14991516Haha yeah, not to make this into a childhood misconceptions thread but I seriously entertained the thought of astronauts escaping the Sun's death and the Big Crunch in the Space Shuttle
>>14991473Well let's see... first flight successfully launches at least to orbit. How many flying trashcans has Musk blown up? If SpaceX had put the money and energy into further developing their real rockets, which are very good, instead of dicking around with Musk's shiny fanboi bait, they might have beaten NASA to a return moon mission. But don;t worry, Musk is "very confident" that his silver POS system will be making orbital flights... just two more weeks, really!
I used to think rockets fly straight to the moon with the engines on the whole time
>>14991502>>14991504These guys are right, everybody knows that successful rockets explode!
>>14991524That's right, five core falcon super heavy is the way to go
>>14991524Musk could blow up hundreds of them and it wouldn't reach the cost of throwing away one SLS. This isn't whatever reddit echo chamber you came from, stop being fucking retarded.
>>14991533Unironically yes, hardware focused development that isn't afraid of failure is what NASA should have AND wanted to do all along. The public (aka you) being ignorant and retarded obviously wouldn't be happy if they saw NASA "blowing" up stuff however. So a rocket costing 4 billions dollars each using 70's technology being over half a decade late was the option left.
>>14991524That's his problem. He is actually thinking about going to space while nasa just fakes everything. I mean, come on, not one single camera on the launch of their signature rocket? Fake as fuck.Elon shows how difficult it is to get to space because his rockets were the first and only to actually do it.
>>14991544falseflag harder.
>>14991544>Elon shows how difficult it is to get to space because his rockets were the first and only to actually do it.This isn't even a half-decent troll attempt. I strongly encourage you to kill yourself to keep your genetics from ever propagating.

>we are testing how to get to the moon even though we did successful missions to the moon 50-60 years ago>We somehow lost knowledge and went backwards in how to get to the moon with a crewI mean at least we are trying again, but this is just sad to watch, this should be a no brainer and easy to do with the technology we have today
>>14991686There are two problems with that. First, you'd be pulling 8g or so at peak acceleration. Second, Crew Dragon's heatshield isn't rated for lunar return.>>14991707A lot of it is safety related. Apollo was very much "#yolo let's see what happens" with regards to crew radiation exposure, but Artemis is supposed to be a pathfinder for sustainable industry, which means you actually need adequate shielding (which shouldn't be too hard, they're testing a vest for it).

So Starship orbital test in a month?
which part of the moon will they fly close?wonder what kind of shit they'll capture, it's been a while after all
>>14991686Technically, yes. The combination is obviously not man-rated because there's been no use for it, and FH hasn't flown enough to be eligible under the CCP rules; IIRC they wanted 7 flights of the same launch vehicle design. But obviously SLS isn't doing 7 flights, so the man-rating rules for Artemis are different, not sure what if any modifications and additional test flights would be required. And then there's the whole question of acceleration; I have no idea what a 3G-max profile would look like, either in terms of performance loss or impact on booster reuse.
>>14991685Holy shit , how its so far away so quickly ??!!Cannot wait in a decade or two to make the trip earth moon as easy and fast as me picking the car to go to work
>>14991724>which part of the moon will they fly close?Somewhere near the equator on the prograde side.
>>14991686it’s not that easy in rocketry (unironically)
Orion is now at 95.000 km away (58.000 miles)
>>14991686Not with FH right now, but maybe with a regular Falcon 9 and then rendezvous in high earth orbit with Starship, then take that Starship to the moon and backat least this is the speculation I've seen

AMD got a System-on-Chip containing a big FPGA certified for rad-hard space use. This article has a lot of marketing fluff but it's legitimately very cool. FPGAs are typically much faster and more power efficient than doing things in software alone, which means you can do more on-orbit compute with a given mass/volume/heat/power budget.https://www.theregister.com/2022/11/15/amd_versal_space_chip/

Lets face it /sfg/, the launch was kino, it almost looked like the Saturn V. Yes i know , its expensive, old, blah blah but you need to think in the bigger picture. Its the first step toward a permanent moon base. Slowly but steady. This also will put pressure on Starship working asap. We all win here. Yes , i know Artemis 3 is scheduled for 2027-2028 , but remember that there will be PLENTY of Starships to the moon in between, and also, when the day finally arrives, seeing astronauts taking off, the refuel campaign, seeing SuperHeavys going up and down almost every day, hearing "we are go for powered descend" , proper SpaceX webcast with proper cameras live at the landing, opening the hatch from 50m, getting in the elevator, going down, and then a camera capturing an astronaut looking to Starship and seeing a monolith in the middle of the moon. Absolute bonkers. All of this will take time, but it will be worth waiting .

>>14991967Oh fuck off, SLS ruins the whole Artemis program. Look at this pathetic launch cadence. At best it's 1 mission per year. An entire decade wasted for simple touch&go missions.Almost everything about Artemis is disappointing when compared to Apollo.
>>14991993I think it's just Raptor, actually. Merlin is still below SRBs for thrust per nozzle area.
>>14991788
>>14992000yeah bro, i would also like Nasa saying fuck it, we scrap block 1 and we go directly to block 2, and it will be completed in 2 years, then 5 mission in that year, at least 2 of those with prebuilded habs for the surface, and the next year 10 launches a year transporting more equipment and people. By 2027 Mars crew landing and we are starting now to build the mars crewed descent/ascent rocket. By 2029 a permanent Mars space station. The Artemis mission architecture is too depressing even if it were to somehow be launching yearly. Just look at Artemis IV.
Would it have killed then to just do this originally in the 1970s and put a smaller HL-20 type vehicle on topJust launch it in dedicated cargo mode when you need maximum mass to orbit for things like building the ISS
>>14992495If it failed, it would mark the end of an era and push all effort over to Starship. If it succeeded, it kicks off Artemis formally and the value of Starship in HLS becomes just as important. It's a win win scenario either way.

The others designs were MFSC's Deep Space Habitat and Boeing's Exploration Gateway Plateform. The NASA study called for notionals designs for a modular spacecraft that could be assembled at the ISS (node 2), if possible using space parts (like Node STA, MPLM, Hab), before heading to the Moon, L1 or Mars with an Orion spacecraft and a crew. >>14993309It is still
>>14993309It is.NASA literally relies on Starship working for Artemis 3, and maybe 4.They gave SpaceX a 2.5 billion contract to get Starship to be Moon-worthy by 2025.
>>14993309When did Starship began development VS when did SLS began development? (And I don't mean just Artemis, I'm talking about all the way back to Constellation or whatever was the first version)

>>14993323SLS began development in 1968 when work on the SSME began. If you want to be pedantic, it actually began in 1955, when the ancestor of the RS-27, H-1, J-2, etc. first flew

>>14993334Sure. It’s still decades younger than SLS.
>>14993330I wouldn't be that pedantic to go back all the way to the origins of each piece they decided to reuse (even though this is shit), but would start from the moment they decided on the specific project that would turn into SLS.
>>14993291Also damn, those questions were spicy

SLS is way too expensive but it isn’t “holding up spaceflight” so much as it is just “failing to advance” it. Your taxes don’t go up a single penny whether this rocket cost $1 mil or $4 bil, and starship is going to push the frontier toward regardless of SLS’s existence or notBest to just look at the silver linings now, know that it’s more competent than POCKOCMOC, and be glad that it makes Artemis more stable and gives jobs to SeX for gateway construction and crewed landings that will dab on every other rocket company. Why couldnt they do icecap core drilling first
With the recent announcement the Space Launch System (SLS) has become challenged by her schedule, the NASA rocket may soon find herself in a battle with a commercial “alternative”. SpaceX’s super powerful Exploration Class rocket is targeting crewed missions to Mars up to 10 years ahead of SLS – although both vehicles continue to avoid being classed as competitors.
>>14993696I don't understand what that shovel was intended for even. They didn't use it for anything but prodding the mole and trying to save the solar panels did they?
>>14993640The Castle testing site is for Rocket 4 first stage engines. Smaller engines like Delphin and upper stage engines are tested in the tunnels at Alameda.t. Astranon
Ok so, when are they going to start to build another SLS?

>>14993744We're building the core stage. We have all the engines done, ready to be put on the test stand at Stennis
>>14993752I mean ironically that is sort of where we are now, the RS-25s are ready and the next boosters are ready. Now we just need another Orion, another Delta 2 upper stage, and another fat piggy orange tank.

The interior of Starship HLS is going to look like an austere Crew Dragon cabin filled with stuff (like the ISS), with a basic airlock underneath.Crew quarters *could* improve on the upgraded Starship for the second landing (A5) but it will still be a long way from what was originally promised by Musk
