It shouldn't be too hard to modify one of those fancy language models to take in text and spit out its likelihood with reference to the training set. Then you can track a person's online posts, feed them to the algorithm and see how trite they are. If x% of a person's posts cross some likelihood threshold, you can safely classify them as an NPC.

The easiest way I've found is simply to ask them if they have an inner monologue. I occasionally do this on reddit if I see someone particularly retarded. If you've got an NPC, they will awkwardly avoid or misunderstand the question before going back to their usual mindless talking points.
