build a foundation with mathematics. start wherever you left off. alternatively, you could pick a subject like Physics, read through it, and learn the maths concepts as you go. I'd suggest the former if you are interested in mathematics and the latter if you are more interested in a specific physical science. Doesn't really matter THOUGH.

I myself avoid "the classics" and any other books which deal with philosophy.

>Is there a definitive physics text for undergraduate calculus based physics 1 and 2?
No, they're all more or less the same. The standard in my state when I did my undergrad was Halliday, Resnik, and Krane. The standard at the school I'm teaching at is Serway. For better or worse every intro physics sequence follows basically the same pattern: Physics I - mechanics and thermo, Physics II - E&M and modern. And all the books go through basically the same structure and routine for introducing topics:
You start with kinematics because it's the basis for all the vector and calculus language you're going to be using for describing motion later on, then forces and the laws of motion as a setup for the rest of linear dynamics (work and energy, impulse and momentum, etc). Then rotational motion, equilibrium, and dynamics to gradually introduce and build up the background needed to describe and combine translation and rotation. Then fluids, thermo, waves, sound.

E&M starts out by introducing charge and Coulomb's Law, basic integration methods for Gauss's Law/Poisson's Equation, circuits, more circuits, magnetic fields, forces, and induction, Faraday and Ampere, really gross Biot-Savart Law integration, then EM waves, optics, and a smidge of modern stuff if there's time.

Some undergraduate courses do a four-course sequence where they split off all the thermal stuff into one semester and all the quantum/relativity stuff into another, but I think the most common practice now is to give thermal the short end of the stick and lump contemporary topics into a Physics III or a Modern Physics course.

tl;dr - Just pick whatever's cheapest or whatever you can pirate easiest.

Ok guys, redpill me on this:
Why tf do Physicsniggas first spend like 2 years going through some College Physics textbook that covers mechanics, fluids/gases, electromagnetism, optics, thermodynamics, and the basics of quantum physics and relativity, and then read a bunch of more books covering the same stuff, except with more detail and more fancy-looking notation?

Can't they just dedicate one book and one class per subject so as to get everything necessary down from each subject?

Structure, as in what? Structuring your day for self-motivation, or structuring the coursework?

For the latter, just go in the order that is suggested on /sci/ wiki, or go through any uni's curriculum and follow that.
For the former, just git gud. Self learning is a challenge because there are no deadlines or tests, so you tend to procrastinate. You should be interested enough that you don't procrastinate on the subject.

No, it's actually a terrible list that will demotivate you. Several of the "prerequisite" books there are more advanced than the "final" calculus books.

If you're starting below a basic highschool level you will be much better off with a highschool level text, or something like khanacademy if you need immediate feedback drills. Look to see if any local schools run adult remedial classes if you're really serious. Especially when you're just starting out it's very useful to have access to an instructor.

If you can handle highschool algebra and geometry well enough, I like Epp's Discrete Mathematics for a gentle first introduction to more abstract "mathy" mathematics. It's very well presented and should be accessible to a motivated student, even if their background is a little weak.
