Its called code rewrite. Musk wasn't trying to take over CEO. He was the CEO because he was the largest shareowner of the newly merged company.

Paypal wasn't the old company's name, that was confinity. Paypal was one of the product name of one of the projects confinity was working on. X.com was doing the same thing, thats why they merged.

Musk wasn't kicked off as CEO because of him being an asshole, he was kicked off because Thiel's team was more professional and the board members wanted something more professional, while Musk's team was a band of rag tag group of college kids. In either case, he got his $200M payday. So he didn't lose anything. Rather he made friends with all the original members and they continue to support his ventures to date. Along the way, becoming the wealthies man on Earth leading 2 of the most innovative companies on Earth, and tacking 2 of the most important problems of modern times.
