I'm a sophmore taking calc 1 in college and I can't read the text book. I'm getting As on the homework and a B on the firts exam and I know how to the problems. But when mt teacher assigns us pages to read I just can't do it. First my head begins to hurt and then I just daze out of existence and before I know it 15 minutes have passed. I don't have ADHD btw. To study I just look at the problems in the textbook and then look up videos of theorganicChemTutor. I'm worried though continuing on this path will hurt my ability to have a deeper understanding of the material.

Western textbooks are beyond trash, they are verbose garbage intended to impress mathematicians, not to teach math.
Find some pdf's of old soviet books on the subject you are trying to learn, they will be infinitely better and more enjoyable.

Deeper understanding of material won’t be found it textbooks. Some people can’t learn math from reading textbooks. Just keep using whatever resources are working for you:

I'm a math phd student and i think no good professor should assign pages of a textbook to just outright read. Sure, maybe for research you read papers and notes, but even then you're just skimming and stopping to look closer at what you need to clarify. A textbook should be a resource, not the main mode of learning. I feel like this is why so many anons here fail miserably when trying to learn math on their own.

To me it kind of sounds like a lazy thing your prof is doing so they can teach less. If you're doing fine on the hw and tests, I would just ignore this "assignment."

Why do math professors always pick the literal WORST textbooks in the universe to teach the material from?
It's like they actively look for the most unintuitive books with the worst practice problems.

Considering the difference between books like Apostol and Stewart?

So attending lectures is what you primarily use to learn.

>> No.14868913

>>14868688
>So attending lectures is what you primarily use to learn.
Let's say you have to learn the limit definition of the derivative. You should open your lecture notes first and read the definition and first few examples. If those were not helpful, you should only then go to the textbook for further clarification. The textbook is nothing more than a cleaner presentation of the same thing that you should already have seen before, plus extra exercises that your prof can't afford to give due to the time constraints of lecture. You should attempt said exercises. If that does not help, try some YouTube videos. Different mediums help different folks.

If you're still lost after all this, you're probably retarded, or have a shaky foundation of prerecs. When the latter is true, you should follow the same steps above with that prerec being the new topic you need to learn.

Nowhere in that string of tasks is there a step where you just open the book and start reading from the first line of the first chapter. That's just not going to help you, I don't care what topic or what class.

If you want to understand the subject, you read a (good) book and watch 3b1b. If you just want to get enough GPA to graduate, you follow lecture notes, Stewart, and watch Organic Chemistry Tutor, or Patrick JMT, or whatever.
Simple as.

not him.
But this kind of answers usually comes from pedantic assholes that struggled as undergrads but managed to overcome it with slightly good grades so they feel entitled to look down on newbies and freshmen.

At a beginner level Stewart is good. Period.

I thought the proper way to go about it would be to read through the text, do the problem set, and ask for clarification during the corresponding lecture/office hours.

Nah, Stewart sucks at the beginner level. He can't decide if he wants the book to be
at an introductory level or a rigorous level, so he switches back and forth, defining and over explaining simple concepts for hundreds of pages, while the difficult parts are given a sentence or two. A better move would be to read the Larson book, which is beginner friendly the whole way through, then the Spivak book or rudin, for a deeper treatment.

Ok well, I agree with in almost all of this.
