What do you think infants are doing during the first 3 months of existence? They examine facial features and expressions, along with figuring out what movements do. They're observing and mimicking what they see. They don't make sense of it until their brains can make the necessary connections, which requires testing that they're not able to do until they've been born and can see. Chimps aren't people, and the study isn't being performed on chimps in utero, so I don't understand the point of you bringing that point up.

The biggest ethical questions that we, as a society, are going to have to deal with this century is the question of under what circumstances are it appropriate to terminate a human life - abortion, euthanasia, justifiable homicide, the death penalty, even war itself - a myriad of issues that hinge on one form or another of this question. These are topics that are not going away any time soon, and these are not topics with neat, simple answers. It does us a disservice to try and bypass those messy and uncomfortable discussions.
