>In an update late Sept. 12 [...] NASA said it dropped plans [for] a Sept. 23 launch. The agency said that [the] date was no linger feasible after delaying a tanking test to confirm the new seals are working properly from Sept. 17 to Sept. 21.
>The earliest launch opportunity is Sept. 27, NASA said, with a potential backup launch date of Oct. 2.
>That backup date remains under review as the agency continues to plan to launch a new crew to the ISS on SpaceX's Crew-5 commercial crew mission on Oct. 3.

It still keeps me up at night how SpaceX is singlehandedly pushing the frontier of human spaceflight, and how bad everything would be if they didn't exist. Imagine if that final Falcon 1 flight failed and SpaceX went bankrupt. Americans would still need to hitch rides on the Soyuz, a Moon landing on the National Team lander would be planned for 2040, and Mars never ever. Too much history hinges on that single fateful launch. It freaks me out.

Found an article on Hubble from a Polish newspaper from the 90's
Hopefully it survived google translate without being too mangled

Two stars from heaven

The Hubble Space Telescope has started its work. On Sunday, it sent the first test photos to Earth. The scientists gathered at the NASA center were delighted. The photos turned out to be twice as sharp as expected.
The joy was all the greater as bad luck had haunted the entire program so far. At first, the launch was delayed almost indefinitely. Then, on the 25th of April, the space shuttle "Discovery" put the telescope in an orbit of 610 kilometers, the hatch protecting the sensitive optical system jammed, and then the guidance system failed.
The troubles are over. The first pictures of a binary star in the constellation of Carina have arrived to Earth from 1,260 lightyears away. Observed by comparable telescopes from Earth, it looks like a single light source.
The telescope will be ready for normal operation within a few months. Until then, its optical system will be sharpened even further - the photos are to be seven times more accurate than the trial ones.
The success of the first transmission increased the appetite. Scientists hope to reach 16 billion years into the past of the universe, that is, to observe objects that are light years away. There is also a chance to spot planets outside the solar system. This would be crucial to studying the possibility of life beyond Earth.

Edward's AFB is 160 miles due east. Slap down a pad and let the booster land there. Fort Irwin is 230 miles. 29 palms is 260 miles. 330-350 miles is empty desert before lake Havasu.

The Falcon is reliable enough that it should be allowed to launch over populated areas. Dragon could be programmed to fire the super dracos before an abort landing over ground.

I'm still glad that FH got chosen for Europa Clipper, but I wonder how much faster interplanetary missions will be when we get better big rockets like Starship. 3 years for a Jupiter mission to arrive would be amazingly fast.

Holy shit bros, how did NASA create this image? Space is a blank expanse of blackness, how was this even done? They must have carefully occluded Cassini behind one of Saturn's moons, because that's the only place in space that stars are visible. I can't even imagine the orbital maneuvering this must have taken. Surely there isn't simply a slider in a GUI somewhere that lets you adjust exposure.

Ignorance, mostly. In energy discussions, it's usually brought up as a storage medium (as opposed to batteries) to make renewable power sources work reliably. To them, it's just a battery with a couple extra steps that seems simple. After all, you're only electrolysis water, to get H2, store the H2, then combust it when ready. However, they don't account for the inefficiencies that compound through the system.

Hydrogen conceptually is pretty cool, hydrogen as a "battery" for storing excess electricity produced by renewables, and coburning it with natural gas makes a lot of sense in a lot of places right now. Hydrogen as an energy dense long term renewable fuel makes a lot of sense as well. Adulthood, however, is realizing you can just bond those pesky hydrogens with carbon or nitrogen to form methane or ammonia which makes it a billion times easier to use and store and just wait to crack it until you need it for something. Of course, methane is undersirable because muh CO2, methalox is much better for rockets where that doesn't matter, but for more pedestrian terrestrial applications cracking and burning ammonia, then capturing or burning or processing the NOx is quite convenient.

It would take way too many modifications including new engines and a complete redesign of tank sizes. And you’d have to forego the korolev cross because trying to do something like fly back boosters would add way too much mass for a rocket as small as soyuz. Your best bet would be to design something modular from scratch—preferably a modern zenit that could be stacked up into a super heavy form. This is exactly what irtysh/yenisei is, however the core modules for this is fucking shite. They had the right idea but are executing it awfully. They should cut their losses and scrap everything and start from the design phase again

Because Ethopian forces aren't going to hack Starlink the way Russia will throw its god damn country at trying to compromise the network. Considering that Starlink is also being sold to USMIL, there's no better opponent in existence in an active state of war than Russia to battle harden the network and the operating system that runs it.

China is beyond livid at Russia's fuckery in Ukraine. The longer the conflict runs, the bigger the threat the Starlink network becomes to their operational regime across geopolitical capacity and they can't shoot down these satellites without essentially declaring war on the US. Ukraine was supposed to be a 3-day decapitation strike and takeover. Plans decades in the making for China just went into the trashcan because Russia shat the bed with the Ukraine war and gave SpaceX and United States a massive ECM and intel/infospace advantage.

China said they are going to. But they lack the orbital launch capability to do anything than talk. Even the rate of their LM launches isn't fast enough. In the time they can build a booster to launch the first set of satellites, SpaceX can put up 3-500 satellites. Then in the time it takes for them to get their first orbits into a correct shell, build another rocket, get it to the pad and launch the next set, SpaceX can put up another 3-500 satellites. So effectivelly, in the span it takes China to put up between 60-120 satellites, SpaceX can put up 600-1000 satellites. Their pace of innovation of putting up their megaconstellation is down there with BlOrgin in getting to orbit.

The world is a lot bigger than the US alone, right now US is highly developed and it still has ~20-30 million people without fiber. You can't get fiber over to the places in the middle of no where.

The satellite internet will only get better over time and latencies reduced, speeds increased, bandwidths increased, capacity increased, reduced cost, etc.

Within another decade or so, more countries will get richer and without proper internet, so they will also need internet and so on.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/14/northrop-executive-spacex-starship-has-potential-but-not-ready-yet.html
>The leader of a Northrop Grumman subsidiary that’s working with Elon Musk’s SpaceX sees exciting potential in the private space venture’s massive Starship rockets, but warned the industry should temper expectations until it hits key milestones.
>“We’re working with SpaceX — Starship is going to be an awesome capability,” Rob Hauge, president of Northrop Grumman’s SpaceLogistics, said during a panel at the annual World Satellite Business Week conference on Wednesday
>But, speaking to CNBC after the panel, Hauge said that while “Starship will be helpful,” SpaceX has yet to reach orbit with a prototype of the rocket.
>“There’s still a lot of work to do ... we need to see a mature launch vehicle,” Hauge told CNBC. “Starship is not there yet.”
>“In order for Starship to get to GEO, they’re planning to do refueling of the rocket in orbit ... which hasn’t been done yet,” Hauge said. “We’re going to make sure this capability works, which means all the way down to making sure the rocket we’re going to go on is going to work.”
Temper your expectations, SpaceX stans

Imagine internalizing this interaction so hard that you turn into a loud weirdo who won't fucking shut up about how AMAZING it is to work as a middling code monkey for NASA or whatever. It's literally not that hard to get a job at NASA, I'm pretty sure 70% of this board could do it.
