Electronic calculators remove the gobsmacking tedium of hand/paper arithmetic and reduce human error. Our education system requires our students to be able to do relatively straightforward calculations without them.

You want to go back to lines of "calculators" - usually women - with slide rules and log tables working stuff out? I know it got us into space (thanks, Katherine J) but can you imagine doing it with the ISS now? How about interpreting JWST results?

I am 61 and remember school maths in the mid-70s: boredom, repetition and log/sine/cosine/tangent/blah/blah tables. Maths is now more interesting and worthwhile AND PRODUCTIVE.

I now spend time undoing the prejudice of uninformed adults who make their children feel inadequate because they can't do the times tables to twenty. Knowing really big multiplication bonds is a party piece; nothing more.
