What's the point of caring about space exploration if i'm not going to live long enough to see it?

It's been around 40 years since we landed on the moon, and we haven't gotten any further since then. That's a pretty glacial pace in terms of human space exploration.

At this rate, we're not going to see a mars landing, never mind anything out of our solar system, for decades.

And you know what the last headline i'll see before i croak? "NASA predicts humans to explore outer solar system in 50 years".

Fuck. ;_;

America needs the Soviets back so they can poke us in the ass with a pitchfork like the good 'ol days. WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG, PUTIN?

fuck Nasa. pretty soon, a crazy private investor is gonna start his own space exploration agency and its gonna be sweet

It all depends.

If our nanodreams come true, just get a few like-minded nerds along with Charles Pellegrino, Eric Drexler, Robert Zubrin, and Beth Biller, and we can just build a ship out of backyard materialas using Drexlerian assemblers to turn plants, wood, and stuff into CNT's and polyfullerene.

And then we can just sail our way to the stars.

Assuming they don't, then fuck, we're running out of resources. At the present rate there won't be much more in the continents. You can say "recycle!", but while you can recycle an old computer into a computer, you can just make one new computer, unless you make several smaller, less powerful ones. As population increases, you need more, much more, to support civilization.

The asteroids have it all. 3554 Amun is worth 20 trillion, and going there would not get above 100 billion, from scratch. The thing is that people don't like to earn cash from untested methods, but people such as Elon Musk, the Howard Hughes of our generation, regardless of what Inurdaes says, and others like Robert Bigelow, are the ones pushing the frontiers further.

in b4 Obama, I swear to God if any of you complains about the new plan...

thats ttrue in the next 20 to 40 years we are going to begin running out of a lot of different minerals and metals (this will be worse that peak oil) mining asteroid other planets and the moon will be a matter of survival not choice

This. Bigelow Aerospace does space stations and space hotels, SpaceX provides space access.

Who will be the first to strip-mine the asteroids? Maybe you, or you, or YOU.

there's more to computers than just materials.
the architecture of the hardware is important, and even more so the software that drives it.

a good example of hardware architecture is memresistors, we can speed up computing quite a bit by implementing them since temporary memory can be stored even when the computer is off.
