Call me a retard, yes I am, but when I first encountered these utubers I always thought they were an individual or maybe a couple. I just assumed they were dedicated people with some talent and skills making these educational vids as a small passive secondary income.
Perhaps they were at first. But then I learned that no, most of them are, ( or became ) small but substantial production teams. They have researchers, script writers, the lighting and video guy, editors, as well as the front guy who is basically just reading a script at this point. The very worse case I can name is that Simon whistler guy who now fronts about a dozen channels, just pumping out shitloads of...well, basically shit now.
They went from being actual "edutainers" with at least some substance, to just being money mills. Their videos were initially interesting, but now are just full of useless trivia and padding.

But now they are fucked. Have you noticed many of the big names are now falling off? Its because everyone is on the bandwagon of monetization, pumping out so much shit that even the utube alogarithms are getting swamped. Now you have human-AI hybrid production units just constantly pumping out tons of "content" on a semi industrial scale. Science, fashion, history, unboxings, movie reviews, games, you name it. These AI driven content producers are just some guy setting up an AI to just trawl the internet for "content" and plaster it together with text to speech programs, some of it lifted directly from wikis. The AI reads the script and the AI finds video and image content to match it, sort of, some of it is hilariously bad. But they still get millions of hits because people are stupid. Near zero effort other than the set up. Guys like Versatium and others just cant compete anymore, so they are beginning to die off.

Yup, not long ago they were actually advertising for staff, a video editor iirc.
The thing is obviously the monetization was bringing in enough income to justify the size of the production team and all the live action. But when you get utube videos created by an AI script getting similar number of views it becomes less profitable. So we are going to see a decline in utube quality ( ironic, I know ). Lots of people are already noticing it.

Yes. Pay attention to the camerawork. Is the guy on camera holding the camera himself? Is it perhaps on a tripod?

Or is the camera being held by a cameraman? If the youtuber hires a cameraman, then he almost certainly hires other people as well. Once you hire one employee/contractor, it becomes easy to do it again. It rarely stops with just one cameraman.
