Excessive nitrogen in soil leeches into ground water, contaminating it, and into waterways causing algal blooms which result in dead spots. It's also converted into ammonia, which burns plant roots, and nitrous oxide, which is a much stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, by soil microbes.
